Student Design Projects Description

Student Capstone Design Projects
Students participate in industry-sponsored capstone design projects with industry mentors and faculty. The capstone design project helps students to integrate the technical concepts learned in the courses they have taken. The experience aims to impart a foundation in team leadership and project management ability that will allow graduate to move with purpose, positively impacting the concerns they will soon face.

Student Design Project Description
Mini Baja (sponsored by SAE): Mechanical Engineering students design, build and race an all-terrain vehicle. Regional competitions simulate real-world engineering design projects and their related challenges.

FIRST LEGO LEAGUE (FLL)
The College of Engineering and Information Technology is the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) partner for the state of Maryland and also the host of the FLL Maryland State Tournament. In partnership with Northrop Grumman, a major sponsor of the tournament, UMBC connects undergraduate/graduate engineering students with Northrop Grumman engineers to mentor FLL teams in challenged schools throughout the Baltimore metropolitan area.

Entrepreneurship Opportunities
UMBC graduate and undergraduate students are given the opportunity to experience the process of planning a business. Students enter their business plans to an on campus competition and then to a regional and national business planning and Entrepreneurial events. UMBC is a recipient of a Kauffman Foundation grant for Entrepreneurship, and the College encourages student participation in these programs.
