Admissions Information

Graduate Admission to the College of Engineering

Students seeking admission to an engineering program should apply online by visiting www.grad.iit.edu/admission/. IIT requires a bachelor's degree conferred with a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0/4.0 (or its equivalent) from an accredited institution for regular admission. Citizens and permanent residents of the United States with a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 2.5/4.0 may be admitted as non-degree students. All degree-seeking applicants must submit Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores. Minimum score requirements vary by department. Refer to the Graduate Bulletin or the academic department's website for the most up-to-date information.
Any applicant whose undergraduate degree was earned at an institution where the primary language of instruction is not English must submit Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores.

Graduate Admission to an Engineering Department

Degree-seeking (Master's and Ph.D.) applicants must submit an application (online), an application fee ($50), complete transcripts from each university the applicant has attended, a professional statement (not exceeding 1000 words) discussing the applicant’s reasons for pursuing graduate study, academic background, research interests (if applicable), relevant professional experience or related accomplishments to date, and career goals, three letters of recommendation (for Ph.D. applicants; Master’s degree applicants need submit only two letters of recommendation), GRE scores, and TOEFL or IELTS scores (if required). A completed application packet must be received by the appropriate deadline below for regular admission consideration. Applications completed after the deadline will still be processed normally, but we cannot guarantee a decision will be made in time for the desired term of entry. In these instances, late applicants may be eligible to defer their application or admission to a subsequent term.

The deadline for Fall 2011 for Domestic Applicants who wish to receive financial consideration is January 31, 2011. The regular deadline for Fall 2011 for domestic Ph.D. applicants is May 1, 2011. The regular deadline for Fall 2011 for domestic Professional Master's or Master of Science applicants is August 1, 2011. If a deadline falls on a Saturday or Sunday, applications completed by the following Monday will be considered to have met the deadline.

Entrance Requirements for Foreign Students

A minimum score of 70 on the Internet-based TOEFL or 523 on the paper-based TOEFL or 5.5 on the IELTS exam is required for admission consideration. If an applicant's scores do not meet these minimum requirements, IIT encourages the applicant to consider retaking the exam.
Admitted students with a score between 70-89 on the Internet-based TOEFL or 523-573 on the paper-based TOEFL or 5.5-6.0 on the IELTS exam will be required to take one or more English courses during their graduate study at IIT. Students are required to enroll in and complete the first of any such necessary courses during their first semester of study at IIT.
Students whose TOEFL or IELTS scores indicate they must take two or three English courses at IIT will have the opportunity to take an IIT exam near the end of their first course to determine whether their English has improved enough to exempt them from the additional course(s). This exam will be given only to students enrolled in the English courses.

Entrance Requirements for Non-Resident Students

A completed application packet must be received by the appropriate deadline below for regular admission consideration. Applications completed after the deadline will still be processed normally, but we cannot guarantee a decision will be made in time for the desired term of entry.
