Undergraduate Admission to the College of Engineering
To be considered for admission to the University of Wisconsin-Madison as a freshman, students must complete a minimum of 17 units of high school course work, including 4 units of English, 3 units of math, 3 units of social studies, 3 units of science, 2 units of a single foreign language, and 2 units of additional academic/fine arts.
Students for whom English is not their first language, and who have studied in a language other than English, must take an official test of English as a foreign language. UW-Madison accepts both the TOEFL and the IELTS tests.
Undergraduate Admission to an Engineering Department
To be considered for admission to a degree-granting engineering program, students must have: satisfied the General Education Communication Skills Part A requirement; a minimum of 24 degree credits; a minimum of 17 credits of calculus, statistics, chemistry, computer science, statics and physics courses required for an engineering degree with a grade point average of at least 2.50; a grade point average of at least 2.00 for all other courses; successfully completed an introduction to engineering course from an approved list.
Additional information: when the number of applicants for transfer to a degree-granting program that meet the above requirements exceeds the capacity of that program, admissions will be limited to that capacity. In order to implement the UW-Madison's goals of maximizing the success of students who are admitted to a program and of achieving a heterogeneous and ethnically diverse student body, selection of students for admission to degree-granting programs operating at capacity will be based on grade point averages, test scores, geographical and personal background, and diversity.
Residency Requirements
30 credits in residence in the College of Engineering, including 15 credits of work in the degree-granting department; last two semesters in residence in the College as a full-time student.
Admissions Requirements for Transfer Students
Complete at least 24 college credits (excluding test credits) that include a course that satisfied GER Communication Part A and that include at least 17 credits of fundamental math/science course work, with a minimum of two semesters of general chemistry or one semester of accelerated chemistry, one semester of calculus-based mechanics, and two semesters of calculus. An introduction to engineering course is recommended but not required. A minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale is required in at least 17 credits including the aforementioned math/science courses and additional courses, if taken, in high-level math, statistics, chemistry, computer science, statics and physics courses; seminars and independent study courses are excluded. Course must have at least C (2.0 on a 4.0 scale) final grades to count for degree credits in the College. Grades for engineering courses, if taken, are noted in the overall application review. Admission is based on program capacity. Most successful applicants have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA, a minimum 3.0 math/science GPA and an established track record of math/science courses and grades at the time of application. Admission to biomedical engineering, chemical engineering and engineering physics is regularly more competitive. Admission to other programs may become more competitive without notice is demand trends change.
