Engineering and Science Student Council - Representatives from each engineering and science society or club meet every other week to plan events and discuss current topics. Also open to all engineering and science students.

Prologues and Transitions - Freshmen orientation program to expose students to academic situations and build team work both in a classroom environment and in an outside, nature experience.

University Academic Services offers extensive tutoring to all university students for most freshman and sophomore courses.

Student Projects

Student Design Projects Description

Design is distributed throughout the four years starting with interdisciplinary design in a required freshman design course culminating with a capstone design project in the senior year. Projects vary by department and by year but are always team focused.

Engineering Information

College Description

Engineering College Description and Special Characteristics

We have one of the few four-year ABET accredited engineering programs with required cooperative education. Beginning after the sophomore year, students alternate terms to accumulate one year of full time industrial experience. This augments the academic programs with paid training in business, industry, and government. The Mexican American Partnership (MAP) program allows students to study their full junior year at Monterrey Technological University, Mexico's premier technical program. There they learn to speak technical Spanish and assimilate, through first-hand experience, the customs and culture of Mexico. The students work one co-op period in a Mexican industrial operation. By functioning in an international business environment, students learn the differences between U.S. and Mexican business practices. The North American Design Institute has brought together companies and universities from three nations: the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Students participate in an exchange program with universities in these countries.

Admissions Information

Graduate Admission to the College of Engineering

Students applying to the graduate programs in engineering should hold an undergraduate degree in engineering with a minimum 3.0 gpa. Students interested in the computer science program should hold an undergraduate degree in computer science, mathematics or engineering. Depending upon the background, pre-requisite computer courses may be required. For all programs, particular attention is given to grades in math, science and engineering (if applicable). Official transcripts from all previous institutions are required; several letters of recommendation are suggested.
The Master of Engineering Management program requirements include those above for engineering, plus three years of post-baccalaureate industrial experience. Additional study in economic principles and probability may be required. Students are encouraged to apply at least eight weeks prior to the beginning of the semester that they wish to attend. The application fee is $30.00.

Entrance Requirements for Foreign Students

Same standards apply to foreign students as to US citizens.

Admissions Requirements for Transfer Students

Transfer students must meet the same criteria as new graduate students. Only courses with grades of "B" or better and applicable to the UDM program will be considered for transfer.

The following text was offered to each school as a guideline for the calculation of externally-funded research expenditures:

Include all expenditures associated with grants and contracts specifically budgeted for externally sponsored research and associated programs and expenditures associated with all gifts auditably used for research. Include expended funds provided by the following external sources:

  1. Federal Government
  2. State Government
  3. Foreign Governments
  4. Industry
  5. Non-Profit Organizations (e.g. foundations)
  6. Individuals
  7. Local Government

The expenditures reported should be only those funds provided by organizations, agencies, and individuals external to the institution. Cost sharing/matching funds should be included only if provided from sources external to the institution.

Only State government funds that were obtained competitively or as matching funds associated with other externally funded programs should be included. State funds that are part of the normal operating budget should not be included regardless of purpose.

For all joint or contracted projects or sub-projects, only the portion of the center research performed by faculty, staff, and students of the affiliated engineering school should be credited to that school. Expenditures for capital costs of research laboratory building construction should not be included.

Expenditures for research laboratory renovations should not be included unless the renovation funds expended came from grants and contracts expressly intended for the direct support of engineering research.

Any portion of academic year and/or summer salary for any researcher that is not derived from external research grants or contracts should not be counted.

Total #: Report total number of individual grants, not the total dollar amount of the expenditures.

Expenditures: Report actual expenditures (as opposed to authorization amounts) in U.S. dollars.

Time frame for expenditures: Report expenditures for your current fiscal year.

Research centers listed as "WITHIN an engineering department" on the Research Centers page (screen 7) of the College of Engineering Profile, will not have their expenditures added to the school's total research expenditures. Such expenditures can be included in the department total, while still being listed for the appropriate center. This allows users to list the expenditures in two areas without double-counting.
