Admissions Information

Graduate Admission to the College of Engineering

Matriculants are required to hold a baccalaureate degree or its equivalent by the time they matriculate in the Graduate School. Admission to Brown graduate programs is highly competitive and only those applicants whose previous records, test scores, and recommendations give clear evidence of their ability to do advanced work of the highest quality will be admitted. The suitability of an applicant's training and interests is also an influential criterion in determining which applicants shall be admitted.
REQUIREMENTS for Sc.M.: Eight courses including Mathematical Methods of Engineering and Physics (ENGN2010, 2020 or their equivalent), thesis and non-thesis option.
REQUIREMENTS for Ph.D.: Preliminary examination, dissertation and oral defense.

Entrance Requirements for Foreign Students

All international applicants whose native language is not English must submit an official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score. An applicant's TOEFL score must be 577, or 90 on the internet-based exam. Those taking the IELTS must achieve a minimum overall band score of 7. Three letters of recommendation; transcripts; personal statement; GRE.

Residency Requirements

Brown requires that degree candidates complete a minimum of two years in residence and in full-time study.
