Admissions Information

Graduate Admission to the College of Engineering

Students wishing to apply for admission to the Graduate School must (1) Access information about the program of choice from the Graduate School website ( (2) Complete the no-cost application online. (3) Request that the Registrar from each college or university previously attended send transcripts directly to the Graduate School. Transcripts for work done at Michigan Tech need not be requested. (4) Take any exams required by the department of interest (e.g. GRE etc.) and have results sent to the Graduate School. (5) Have letters of recommendations or recommendation forms sent to the Graduate School for departments that require them.

Graduate Admission to an Engineering Department

All application materials are uploaded to the graduate website as detailed in the information about admission to the college. Check the departmental web pages for specific information regarding their programs.

Entrance Requirements for Foreign Students

International students must meet the same requirements as domestic students. Most departments require GRE and TOEFL scores. The internet based TOEFL must be 79 or higher depending on the department. International students must demonstrate the capacity for supporting themselves for the first year of study.

Entrance Requirements for Non-Resident Students

The entrance requirements for non-resident students are the same as for residents.

Residency Requirements

Students must take at least 2/3 of their class work and all of their research wrok from Michigan Tech.

Admissions Requirements for Transfer Students

Students must apply for admission to the program of choice. A maximum of 1/3 of the graduate course credits taken as a graduate student at another institution may be accepted for graduate credit at Michigan Tech. The number accepted depends on an evaluation by the major department and the Dean of the Graduate School.
