Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science focuses on preparing students to address the contemporary and future challenges of the ever-evolving fields of computer engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science. As the Internet, wireless communications, and advancements in energy systems increasingly define modern society, an education in these essential fields is incredibly valuable. Current research at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science is conducted in a number of research areas, including Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive Wireless Systems Networks, Controls, Cybersecurity, Electromagnetics, Energy and Signal Processing, Formal Methods, and Hardware Design and Computer Architecture.

Research Description By Engineering Research Center

Center for Environmental Systems in Engineering

The Center for Environmental Systems in Engineering is focused on environmental science, engineering, and technology. The center includes faculty from the departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, and Mechanical, Aerospace, and Manufacturing Engineering. Faculty within the Center conduct research in the broad field of environmental systems, focusing on two broad areas: environmental assessment and environmental technology. Graduate students from civil, environmental, chemical, and mechanical engineering all participate in the research and academic elements of the Center for Environmental Systems Engineering (CESE).

Center for Systems Assurance

The Center for Information and Systems Assurance and Trust (CISAT)is made up of faculty members from six schools and colleges at Syracuse University (College of Engineering and Computer Science, iSchool, S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, College of Law, and the College of Arts and Sciences) who share a common vision of improving society through the creation of trustworthy systems. The faculty, along with their partners, are interested in exploring questions such as: What are the right combinations of policy, assurance, computing, and trust that balance risk, reward, safety, and innovations in ways that maximize participation and provide opportunity, while mitigating risk to acceptable levels?; What must be assured and to what degree?; How are the components of policy, law, technology, and assurance combined productively? What, if any, are the underlying principles guiding the combination?; How is trustworthiness established and maintained (where trustworthiness includes integrity, confidentiality, reliability, safety, accountability, and ethics)? Many CISAT Fellows have successful and distinguished careers in industry and government. Most Fellows maintain active projects and continuing relationships with government agencies, corporations, and other academic institutions.

Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems

The CoE-EES conducts research to develop new technologies, solutions, and applications that will improve health and human performance in the following areas: 1) Built environmental systems-indoor air quality, comfort, lighting, acoustics, energy efficiency, and intelligent control systems. 2) Urban ecosystems-renewable resources, ambient air quality, water resource management, waste management, and sustainable development. 3) The designation of Central New York as the home of the Center of Excellence in Environmental Systems marks the official launch of the region as the world's leader in environmental technology.

Computer Applications and Software Engineering

"CASE is New York State’s premier applied research center for interdisciplinary expertise in complex information intensive systems, including monitoring and control, predictive analysis, intelligence, security and assurance.
CASE has been a designated New York State Center of Advanced Technology (CAT) since 1984, bringing together traditional academic strengths in research and education to promote strong university-industry interaction and generate positive economic impact across New York State and beyond."

Environmental Quality Systems Center

The Center for Environmental Quality Systems (EQS Center) has been
established as a hub with centralized capabilities and distributed
facilities within NYS to stimulate total indoor environmental systems and
their interactions with urban eco-systems. This center is engaged in
leading-edge multi-disciplinary research in building systems engineering,
performance, and thermofluids engineering. As a Strategically Targeted
Academic Research (STAR) Center, this center will conduct research, create
new knowledge, develop & transfer performance, reduce life cycle costs and
improve the quality of built and urban environments. EQS is committed to
technology transfer and to commercialization of its research and
intellectual property through strong collaboration in business development
with the New York Indoor Environmental Quality (NYIEQ) Center, Inc.

Geofoam Research Center

The mission of the Geofoam Research Center (GRC) is to conduct research, educate, and facilitate information exchange about geofoam and its increasing variety of applications. Research is performed in a variety of functions, including development of new testing methods, testing and analysis of geofoam under a variety of loading conditions, characterization and modeling of geofoam behavior, as well as instrumentation and monitoring of field performance.

Institute of Sensory Research

Focused on advancing the understanding and modeling of sensory systems and related areas at the interfaces between living systems and their environment. Transmission of such sensory stimuli as light, sound, or vibration, and their transduction into nerve impulses; with information processing in the peripheral nervous system and the brain; and with the relationshps between sensory stimuli and the sesations and perceptions they produce, as well as with properties of biomaterials and related biomedical devices and the factors controlling chewing and swallowing.

Syracuse Biomaterials Institute

The Syracuse Biomaterials Institute (SBI) exists to create knowledge and technology associated with the materials involved in healthcare and biological systems while training the next generation of scientists in this field. SBI includes participation from multiple academic units and features a modern Central Research Facility outfitted with equipment spanning polymer chemistry, materials science, cell culture. Research emphases include soft matter, materials interfaces, and smart medical devices for cardiovascular and orthopedic applications.
