Student Design Projects Description

Student Capstone Design Projects
Students participate in industry-sponsored capstone design projects with industry mentors and faculty. The capstone design project helps students to integrate the technical concepts learned in the courses they have taken. The experience aims to impart a foundation in team leadership and project management ability that will allow graduate to move with purpose, positively impacting the concerns they will soon face. Students have the option of participating in an integrated capstone project with Computer Engineering students covering two semesters, simulating an authentic professional engineering experience.

The College of Engineering and Information Technology is the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) partner for the state of Maryland and also the host of the FLL Maryland State Tournament. In partnership with Northrop Grumman, a major sponsor of the tournament, UMBC connects undergraduate/graduate engineering students with Northrop Grumman engineers to mentor FLL teams in challenged schools throughout the Baltimore metropolitan area.

Entrepreneurship Opportunities
UMBC students can elect to take a minor in entrepreneurship and innovation through the Alex.Brown Center. Students may participate in an "idea competition" to pitch ideas for new businesses or campus programs. Graduate and undergraduate students may develop and enter their business plans in an on campus competition and then to a regional and national business plan and Entrepreneurial events. UMBC is a recipient of a Kauffman Foundation grant for Entrepreneurship, and the College encourages student participation in these programs.
