Research Description By Graduate Engineering Department

Chemical, Biochemical & Environmental Engineering

Students pursuing graduate degrees in the Department of Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering are offered a broad range of research opportunities that apply chemical and environmental engineering principles to problems that are important in today’s society. Examples of these research opportunities include the development of novel strategies to remove pharmaceuticals from treated wastewater, understanding the fate and transport of toxic organic compounds in the Chesapeake Bay, developing new bioprocess strategies for the rapid production and purification of biopharmaceuticals, and producing new materials and sensors to enable the development of engineered tissues.

Computer Science and Electrical Engineering

COEIT's Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering conducts ongoing research in a wide-range of areas, including: adaptive equalization, biomedical imaging and signal processing, coding theory, computer engineering, cryptology and network security, distributed databases, graphics and animation, image and data compression, information storage and retrieval, intelligent agents, joint time frequency/time-scale analysis, networks and systems, neural networks, nonlinear optics, optical communications and networks, parallel and distributed computing, photonic switches, quantum cryptography and quantum computation, quantum electronics, semiconductor optoelectronics, signal and image processing, solitons on optical fiber, ultrashort pulse lasers, visualization, information assurance, data mining, and robotics. Currently developed is a track in Games Development within the computer science undergraduate program. National and international funding of faculty and being located in Baltimore-Washington, DC corridor offers CSEE students many unique opportunities to pursue research and to work in local industry.

Information Systems

COEIT's Department of Information Systems conducts research in the following core areas: Artificial Intelligence/Knowledge, Database/Data Mining, Human-Centered Computing (HCC), Software Engineering, and Health Information Technology. In addition, faculty members are engaged in research in cross-cutting areas Cybersecurity. The research in the department is funded by various federal agencies including the National Science Foundation, National Institute of Standards and Technology, the National Institutes of Health and Department of Education. In addition, several faculty members have current research funding from industries such as Microsoft, Samsung, Google, and Northrop Grumman.

Mechanical Engineering

COEIT Department of Mechanical Engineering conducts research focused in biomechanics that includes soft and hard tissue mechanics, dynamic systems and design of advanced control systems, robotics, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs); mechanical behaviors of engineering and advanced materials; and thermal fluids, micro-fluidics, MEMS and nano-technologies. Collaborative efforts by mechanical engineering department faculty-student research teams have led to number of notable discoveries, including a new kind of percussion drill bit, an automated machine for assembling fireworks, controller for a pump with no moving parts, innovative animal lameness detection technologies, non-destructive damage detection systems, micro-fluidic pumps and other discoveries. The department plays a vital role in the design and development of systems that harness energy and motion-with important applications in industries from manufacturing to medicine. With funding from nationally recognized sources such as the National Science Foundation, Lockheed Martin Corporation, The National Institutes of Health, Arthritis Foundation, The National Institute of Standards and Technology, The American Heart Association, The American Dental Society, and the U.S. Army, the program offers students the opportunity to play an active part in important research projects.

CAST Center for Advanced Sensor Technology (Campus-wide Center)

Center for Advanced Sensor Technology (CAST) is a focal point for the development of novel measurement and instrumentation technologies. It is a multidisciplinary effort that involves faculty from several departments. The core mission is to translate cutting edge research into practical solutions for everyday problems. CAST faculty are engaged in basic and applied research in various aspects of sensors and instrumentation. Bioprocess sensors for optical monitoring of oxygen, pH and pCO2 have been developed at CAST that have been successfully commercialized ( These optical sensors have led to a new class of miniature bioreactors useful for rapid bioprocess optimization. In other research, sensors based on various bacterial binding proteins are being developed. Next generation sensors that are being developed are based on surface plasmon coupled emission and these promise unprecedented increase in sensitivity at low cost.

CHMPR Center for Hybrid Multicore Productivity (COEIT)

Center for Hybrid Multicore Productivity Research (CHMPR) optimizes productivity, performance and scalability of applications of hybrid multicore processors and to investigate and prototype new applications and cloud computing services made possible by hybrid multicore computing capabilities that meet the needs of industry and government partners.

CUERE Center for Urban Environmental Research & Education (Campus-wide Center)

Center for Urban Environment Research & Education (CUERE) advances the understanding of the environmental, social, and economic consequences of the transformation of the urban landscape through research, conferences and symposia, support of university teaching programs. CUERE fosters interdisciplinary approaches to environmental science, engineering, and public policy. CUERE manages the NSF-sponsored Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) at UMBC on Water in the Urban Environment.

CWIT Center for Women In Technology (COEIT)

Center for Women In Technology (CWIT) is dedicated to increasing the representation of women in the creation of technology in the engineering and information technology fields. CWIT efforts begin with nurturing a strong group of Scholars, grow to building community resources for other women in these majors, extend to fostering a healthy gender climate and ITE pedagogy in College of Engineering and Information Technology (COEIT) departments, and finally expand into outreach efforts to increase interest in technical careers. A successful program for female-friendly engineering and information technology education at UMBC will help make UMBC a destination for women (and men) interested in technical careers and serve as a national model for other universities.

UMBC Center for Cybersecurity (CSEE)

The UMBC Center for Cybersecurity is an interdisciplinary university center that unifies UMBC’s many cybersecurity capabilities. The Center aims to provide both Maryland and the nation with academic and research leadership, collaboration, innovation, and outreach in this critical discipline by streamlining our academic, research, workforce development, and technology incubation activities to advance UMBC’s position as a leading research university in cybersecurity-related disciplines.
