Requirements

**REQUIREMENTS FOR UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSIONS**
The UMBC Admissions Committee weighs a number of factors in making its decision. In addition to grade point average and standardized test scores, the strength of the curriculum, class rank and other achievements as well as essay are considered. UMBC expects applicants to have completed a strong college preparatory program of study from an accredited high school. The minimum program of study should include:
* English: four years
* Social Science/History: three years
* Mathematics: three years
* Science: three years
* Language other than English: two years

Candidates for freshman admission must submit the following:
* A completed UMBC Undergraduate Admissions Application
* An essay (Instructions and topics may be found on the undergraduate admissions application.)
* An official copy of your current high school transcript
* A list of courses in progress (if not included on the high school transcript)
* Official SAT scores forwarded to UMBC by the Educational Testing Service or official ACT scores sent by ACT. (In reviewing students' SAT scores, UMBC uses all three parts of this standardized exam. )
* A letter of recommendation from a teacher (optional, but highly encouraged).
* A $50 nonrefundable application fee
* A final high school transcript upon completion of your senior year

UMBC welcomes home-schooled applicants. In addition to the above admissions materials, home-schooled applicants should submit curriculum vitae describing course content, instructional materials and an evaluation of the student’s work.

**REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATE ADMISSIONS**
Graduate School " Applicants to all graduate programs must meet the following admission requirements.
1. Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. university or an equivalent degree from a comparable foreign institution
2. Bachelor's degree with a ≥3.0 GPA on a 4-point scale
3. Undergraduate program must reflect successful completion of the prerequisites for graduate study in the chosen field
4. Acceptable score on the TOEFL for applicants whose native language is not English or who do not have a degree from a U.S. post-secondary institution; acceptable scores: ≥550 on paper-based test; ≥213 on computer-based test; ≥80 on internet-based test
5. Official copy of transcripts (and English translations if not in English) from each post-secondary institution attended
6. 3 letters of recommendation
7. GRE General Test recommended unless stated as required by the specific graduate program

Recommendations

**RECOMMENDATIONS FOR UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSIONS**
Students planning to major in mathematics, engineering, or science areas are strongly recommended to have completed four years of mathematics, including trigonometry, pre-calculus and/or calculus.
