Degree Requirements

Bachelor's Degree Requirements

Successful completion of at least 132 in Computer Engineering, 131 semester hours for Mechanical and Engineering Science degrees, 133 semester hours for Electrical Engineers, and 131 semester hours for Industrial Engineers. Electrical, Mechanical and Engineering Science degrees require a minimum of 64 hours of engineering courses, up to a maximum of 73 hours. Technical electives range from 7 hours in Engineering Science up to 12 in Mechanical, some of which may be taken in allied sciences. Other requirements include 21 semester hours of calculus-level mathematics, at least 9 credits in physics, and 4 credit in chemistry. Also at least 6 credits in English composition, 6 credits in social science, and 6 credits in humanities. Total liberal arts credits must be at least 68. Industrial engineering degree requires 54 engineering and 13 business credits. For all programs a cumulative 2.0 grade point average is required for 1) all courses; 2) all engineering courses; and 3) 24 credits of core engineering courses. B.A. degree requirements include 42 engineering credits, the remainder being primarily liberal arts credits.

Master's Degree Requirements

The Master of Science in Computer Science requires the satisfactory completion of a 30-semester hour program, including either a 6-semester hour thesis (CSC 301 and 302) or a 3-semester hour project (CSC 300, 301 or303). Full-time students can complete the program in four semesters. Part-time students usually complete the program in six or seven semesters. At least 27 semester hours must be in graduate computer science courses. Up to 3 semester hours of graduate courses in areas outside of computer science may be taken with the written approval of the graduate program director. At least 24 semester hours must be completed in residence at Hofstra. A minimum 3.0 grade point average with a grade of C or better in all courses is required. The Master of Science in Computer Science Program requires the satisfactory completion of : three fundamental required courses (9 semester hours) and two thesis courses (6 semester hours) and 15 semester hours of elective courses, or three fundamental required courses (9 semester hours) and one capstone project course (3 semester hours), and 18 semester hours of elective courses.
