Engineering College Description and Special Characteristics

The undergraduate engineering program at Santa Clara University (the Jesuit university in Silicon Valley) is designed to be a four-year experience. The BS programs include prerequisite coursework that provides students with foundation knowledge in the mathematical and natural sciences. Required and elective engineering courses then use this knowledge to understand, apply, and optimize appropriate technologies for the benefit of humanity. The BS programs also include required coursework in the humanities that fulfills the goals of the University Core Curriculum, which seeks to prepare Santa Clara graduates for intelligent, responsible and creative citizenship by providing them with knowledge, habits of heart and mind, and experience of engagement with the world. The University and School of Engineering maintain extensive computing facilities as well as many specialized laboratories. A cooperative education program is available but not required. Engineering students can study abroad and still graduate in four years. There are several five-year BS/MS programs in the School of Engineering. The Engineering Graduate School is operated in an early morning/evening format that serves both local working professionals and full-time graduate students. Faculty members in the School of Engineering have the opportunity to collaborate with Silicon Valley-based industries and incorporate this experience into the curriculum.
