Student Design Projects Description

The School of AEROSPACE and MECHANICAL ENGINEERING offers its students project-based learning opportunities throughout the four-year academic experience. The school sponsors multidisciplinary teams who have found success in several national design competitions: the ASME Human Powered Vehicle, the Formula SAE Race Car, SAE Mini Baja, Boomer Rocket Team and AIAA Design, Build, Fly. In addition, the school incorporates practical experience into its curriculum by partnering with industry to develop senior capstone projects from real-world engineering problems. Corporate sponsorship for the capstone program has grown to exceed $150,000 in project funding and gives students the opportunity to design micro-electro mechanical systems or MEMS, robotic assistive devices, design, analyze and test systems for oil and gas industry, manufacturing process improvements, aerodynamic packages for the auto industry, unmanned aerial reconnaissance vehicles, a next-generation supersonic strike aircraft, and much more.

The Stephenson School of BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING offers its students undergraduate research projects throughout the four year academic experience, which are based upon real world problems facing our industrial partners and physicians. We train our students to use structured methodologies for creative design of technologies that interface with living systems. The school sponsors multidisciplinary teams to be competitive in design competitions at the national level. Senior capstone projects are sponsored by our industrial affiliates, providing students with mentorship and guidance throughout the entire design and product assessment phases. Students are offered projects across a wide range of BME sub-specializations including biomechanics, cellular and tissue engineering, imaging, medical devices, and systems & synthetic biology.

CHEMICAL ENGINEERING students have opportunities for design both within and outside of class. Students select their own teams to design and build chemical process- powered model cars which then compete within the department, and top cars compete regionally and nationally via a contest sponsored by AICHE. In Advanced Process Design, our senior capstone course, students are broken into small groups. Each group has a project for product and/or process design, with complete design of process plants including complete flow sheets, estimated plan costs, costs of process development and economics of investment. Subjects the students have developed include biofuel processing, arsenic removal from municipal water, protein purification, engineering new refrigerants, enhanced oil recover, sea water desalination and others.

CIVIL ENGINEERING and ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE has several design projects. Team-based design projects are integrated throughout the undergraduate program. The Architectural Engineering Capstone Course focuses on design of a building system; the Civil Engineering Capstone focuses on design of some civil infrastructure component that involves most sub-disciplines of civil engineering, e.g. bridge; the Environmental Engineering/Science course involves real world, field-based projects. The ASCE student organization competes in the steel bridge, concrete canoe, and geotechnical competitions.

COMPUTER SCIENCE capstone projects deliver medium-scale software products (2,000 to 5,000 lines) with documentation, written and oral reports, and development records -- 10 to 16 deliverables in all. Projects are completed by teams of two to four students, and address problems inspired by software projects from industrial settings.

Our School of ELECTRICAL and COMPUTER ENGINEERING has sponsored design activities in the ECE capstone experience, and has lead responsibility in a number of regional and national contests, some with college-wide student participation. Capstone projects cover a wide range of hardware/software/systems topics.

ENGINEERING PHYSICS capstone projects are often components of larger research projects lead by faculty members and funded by external grants. During two semesters, capstone students research the technical background for their project, design and construct the apparatus and software required, carry out the experiments, and analyze the results.

The School of INDUSTRIAL and SYSTEMS ENGINEERING implements system design throughout the curriculum with the Capstone Course representing the culminating design experience in the form of fieldwork for local companies. Our small student teams are supported by a company representative and a faculty advisor providing a valuable mentoring resource for the students to access during the course of the project. Our Capstone students augment the engineering staff at the companies picking up team building and life skills by solving open-ended problems well beyond the scope of textbook problems or laboratory experiments. Each year, several projects are offered for interdisciplinary teams of students, most often between Industrial & Systems Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Capstone projects are diverse and state-of-the-art involving all aspects of analysis, design, synthesis, implementation and application. The Capstone teams obtain vital communication skills and experience through the oral and written deliverable requirements of the course. Past and present company sponsors have included Fortune 200 companies, major metropolitan and government hospitals and local Federal agencies.

In PETROLEUM and GEOLOGICAL ENGINEERING students in the senior capstone course are given oilfield data, which they review and analyze to make decisions on whether hydrocarbon is present and if so, how to manage the reservoir in order to maximize profitability. Specific assignment is:
To evaluate a field in terms of economic potential measured in terms of leasehold bid value subject to multiple realistic constraints.
-Economic Constraint " Generation of a 15% rate of return on investment
-Engineering Standard " Reserves can be booked as proved within the Petroleum Resource Management System, PRMS
-Reservoir Engineering Constraint " volumetrics, ultimate recoveries, and recovery factors must be supported.
