Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction

Research is underway in water resources engineering, air quality, environmental engineering, transportation engineering, pedestrian safety, geophysics, earthquake engineering, construction and management, hazardous waste management and transportation, and energy efficient design.

Computer Science

There is ongoing research in algorithm design and analysis, computer
graphics, Internet security, parallel programming, automated deduction,
computational geometry, data mining and clustering techniques,
distributed and fault-tolerant systems, cybersecurity, and in preventing
computer fraud and identity theft.

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Research is underway in control and filtering in aerospace, robotics and intelligent system applications, transmission and manipulation of image data, fault-tolerant systems, study of the interaction of electrostatic, magnetostatic, electromagnetic fields, signal processing and automated pattern recognition techniques to compressed digital imagery, neural networks, optical character recognition, device modeling, process and physics including quantum devices, photovoltaics and numerical methods.

Mechanical Engineering

Research is underway in renewable energy, solar energy, computational fluid mechanics, HVAC, acoustics, ionic polymer actuator and smart material based robotic system, microfluidics for biomedical applications, nuclear engineering, hydrogen production and utilization, fuel cell.

Research Description By Engineering Research Center

Applied Geophysics Center (AGC)

The UNLV Applied Geophysics Center (AGC) was developed to enhance the knowledge of geophysical issues and hazards that affect Southern Nevada and to help mitigate the consequences of any future seismic activity. The mission of the AGC is to promote research and teaching of geophysics for engineering applications at UNLV. Geotechnical site characterization for the arid environment and geotechnical earthquake engineering applications are emphasized. The primary objectives are to conduct sponsored research and educate engineering students in geophysics for engineering applications, through formal coursework and participation in research. A secondary but still important objective involves community outreach.
Projects Include:
Correlation of in-situ test data with shear strength for deep foundation design
Detection and delineation of caves and other cavities using Seismic Refraction Tomography (SRT)
Legacy seismic data
SEB instrumentation
ANSS monitoring improvement
UNLV seismic station
Earthquakes in Southern Nevada
Seismic surface waves to characterize complex systems
Seismic characteristics of select engineered nanomaterials in granular media

Center for Energy Research (CER)

The Center for Energy Research (CER) focuses on research, information exchange, and education in energy topics. Issues of particular interest to our geographical region include such general topics as:

Solar energy utilization schemes
Arid regions energy systems, for example, dry cooling
Advanced cooling concepts, such as refrigeration systems that do not use chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)
Nuclear waste issues
For broader applications, topics of interest are:

Conventional power generation systems
Energy conservation devices and systems
Environmental control issues for energy systems
The center serves as a generator and catalyst for ideas, a stimulus for interdisciplinary cooperation, and a facilitator for commercialization. It provides a base to bring together people from many disciplines to work on specific problems of interest.

Center for Information Technology and Algorithms (CITA)

Advances in information technology have dramatically transformed the way in which people live, work, learn, communicate and conduct business. The Center for Information Technology and Algorithms is a center with a focus on information technology, for both theoretical and applied research, including such diverse areas as:

Online algorithms
Combinatorial optimization
Approximation techniques
Adaptive methods
and application areas such as:

Homeland security
Entertainment engineering

CITA is a multidisciplinary unit, operated by faculty, staff and students at UNLV. It facilitates national and international collaborations, interdisciplinary work across our own campus and with other academic entities.

Center for Materials and Structures (CMS)

Mission Statement:
The Center for Materials and Structures (CMS) was established at the University of Nevada Las Vegas in response to a growing national, statewide, and local need to perform research and educate students for careers related to materials and structures. Industries such as aerospace, automotive, civil infrastructure, defense, electronics, energy, and marine need highly trained materials and structures engineers and scientists. Critical national needs requiring large focused research programs include: the development of analysis methods and new structural concepts for the U.S. Army Future Combat Systems, the characterization of new materials for Department of Energy Transmutation and Hydrogen initiatives, and the evaluation of materials and structures for proposed nuclear storage facilities such as Yucca Mountain. Critical local needs also include the ability to respond quickly to provide research, engineering, and scientific support services to small and medium sized companies in Nevada. 21 faculty and research staff from the departments of Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Physics have been working collaboratively for several years on projects sponsored by a wide range of government agencies and industry.

The Mission of CMS is to conduct materials and structures research and to also provide educational and outreach activities in support of the local and national need for highly trained personnel in these fields.

Goals and Objectives:
The Goals of the Center for Materials and Structures Are to:
Conduct research critical to national and local needs.
Promote results through publications, conferences, and workshops.
Educate students for careers in materials and structures fields.
Provide education and outreach activities to the local community.

Center for Mechanical & Environmental Systems Technology (CMEST)

CMEST provides research and development in the areas of computational and experimental fluid mechanics and dynamics, aerodynamics, acoustics, and vibration as they relate to the analysis, design, and development of HVAC system components, mechanical products, and related manufacturing processes.

Energy Material Interaction Technology Initiative of Nevada (EMITION) Center

The EMITION (Energy-Material Interaction Testing Institute of Nevada) combines both laboratories with extended applications allowing multidisciplinary teams to interact on pulsed power related initiatives using and enhancing current capabilities of the existing laboratories. The overarching objective is to enable Nevada to compete for future research in novel areas that are pertinent and beneficial to the State and having private industry, government industry, national laboratory, and federal government agency linkage. Focal areas of particular importance to Nevada are pulsed power device technology and applications of pulsed power in the materials, biological/medical, and environmental fields. The EMITION Center is dedicated to the study of pulsed power (both the electromagnetic type and the particle beam type) and its interaction on materials with these focal interests in mind.

Entertainment Research Center (ERC)

The ERC (Entertainment Research Center) is a dynamic collaboration of interdisciplinary research fields including media, arts, design, humanities, engineering, science, business, game design, and simulation. The ERC was founded in 2014 by Dr. Si Jung Kim to conduct world class basic and applied interdisciplinary research projects in the field of entertainment and human-computer interactions.

Nevada Center for Advanced Computational Methods (NCACM)

The NCACM provides resources for the interaction of experts from various disciplines towards research on the study and advancement of computational methods for solving nonlinear problems, with emphasis on the study of environmental problems. The application of new and future promising numerical techniques are of interest to researchers in many disciplines. The NCACM serves as a catalyst for enhancing creativity, developing state-of-the-art computational techniques and algorithms, and jointly solving complicated problems in the fields of fluid flow and species transport, including interactions associated with chemistry, biology, and human health.

Nevada Nanotechnology Center (NNC)

The mission of the Nevada Nanotechnology Center (NNC) is to act as a focal point at UNLV and in the State of Nevada for research and training in nanoscale science and technology through interdisciplinary research, education and outreach activities. NNC is equipped with state of the art fabrication and characterization facilities that are being actively used by faculty and students from multiple departments. NNC is actively involved in the development of new and enhanced-performance electronic/photonic devices through the application of nanotechnology. NNC is also involved in outreach activities to provide learning opportunities to local community by sponsoring nanotechnology summer institutes for local K-12 students and teachers.

Transportation Research Center (TRC)

Perform research to advance expertise and application of technology in traffic operations and management in rapidly growing urban areas.
Assist national, state and local transportation agencies in meeting their needs to provide safe, efficient and Biennial Report (2007-2009) sustainable transportation systems.
Educate and train leaders and professionals prepared to meet the region’s and nation’s need for safe, efficient and sustainable transportation systems.
Seek collaborative research efforts with institutions and organizations with similar goals.
Provide extension and outreach services to public and private sector organizations.
