Entrance Requirements and Recommendations

Requirements

University of the Pacific does not require a fixed pattern of secondary school courses, but the applicants are expected to complete a strong college preparatory program. This would include courses in the fields of English, Social Science, Foreign Languages, Laboratory Sciences and Mathematics. Admission is selective and each applicant will be considered on a basis of a variety of factors which are evaluated through a very personalized review process. Special emphasis is placed on the coursework selected, the grades achieved and the cumulative grade point average. Supporting recommendations from the school counselor or teacher are also important.

Recommendations

English-4 years; Fine/Performing Arts-1 year; Foreign Language-2 years; Mathematics-4 years for Science & Technical majors; 3 years for all other majors. Math sequence through Trigonometry or Calculus. Pre-calculus recommended. Lab Science-3 years for Biology, Physics and Chemistry, Science & Technical majors; 2 years for all other majors; Electives-1 year for Science & Technical majors; 4 years for all other majors (college preparatory courses).

Student Design Projects Description

Senior projects are required for all engineering majors. The nature of the project is dictated by the student's major, accreditation criteria, and client or project mentors' requirements. In some areas the students work with professional mentors who help guide the students at various points throughout the project. Many projects receive some financial support from local professional societies, industry, or alumni donations.

Engineering College Description and Special Characteristics

The mission of the School of Engineering and Computer Science is to provide a superior, student-centered learning environment which emphasizes close faculty-student interaction, experiential education, and distinctive research opportunities. Graduates will be prepared to excel as professionals, pursue advanced degrees, and possess the technical knowledge, critical thinking skills, creativity, and ethical values needed to lead the development and application of technology for bettering society and sustaining the world environment. The School is recognized for its close faculty-student interaction, the co-op program, applied learning, and development of students' professional skills. A Master of Science degree program allows students to begin graduate course work during their senior year of undergraduate studies at Pacific, completing both BS and MS degree concurrently.

Entrance Requirements for Foreign Students

International applicants whose native language is not English are required to provide scores from the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). The minimum TOEFL score accepted for admission is 79 (Internet) and/or 550 (paper). In addition, students may also take the IELTS; a minimum score of 6.0 is required for consideration. International applicants who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States must submit a detailed Certification of Finances showing sufficient financial resources for study at the University in order to comply with the regulations of the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service. Other special admission information and instructions regarding admission will be provided upon request.

Residency Requirements

Students must complete a minimum of 32 of their last 40 units at the university.

A minimum of 2.75 in all coursework with a maximum of 70 units accepted from a 2-year community college. The School of Engineering and Computer Science has articulation agreements with many California community colleges.

Undergraduate Engineering Dual Degree Program Description

A student may earn concurrent baccalaureate degrees from different schools or in different specialties within a school or college by simultaneously completing all requirements for the specific degrees. When two different specialties fall under the same degree (such as a B.A.) the two specialties will be considered as two majors. If a student holds a baccalaureate degree from University of the Pacific and wishes to pursue a second bachelor's degree in a different specialty, a minimum of thirty-two (32) semester units of work must be completed between receipt of the first and second degree.

Admissions Information

Graduate Admission to the College of Engineering

Admission is selective. Each applicant is considered on the basis of a variety of factors which are evaluated through a very personalized review process. Admission requirements include a Bachelor's degree in engineering or computer science, general subject GRE scores, minimum GPA of 3.0. Three letters of recommendation and a one-page personal statement.

Entrance Requirements for Foreign Students

On the TOEFL iBT a minimum score of 80 or a score of at least 550 (213 on the computer-based test) is required to be considered for admission to the Graduate School. The following text was offered to each school as a guideline for the calculation of externally-funded research expenditures:

Include all expenditures associated with grants and contracts specifically budgeted for externally sponsored research and associated programs and expenditures associated with all gifts auditably used for research. Include expended funds provided by the following external sources:

  1. Federal Government
  2. State Government
  3. Foreign Governments
  4. Industry
  5. Non-Profit Organizations (e.g. foundations)
  6. Individuals
  7. Local Government

The expenditures reported should be only those funds provided by organizations, agencies, and individuals external to the institution. Cost sharing/matching funds should be included only if provided from sources external to the institution.

Only State government funds that were obtained competitively or as matching funds associated with other externally funded programs should be included. State funds that are part of the normal operating budget should not be included regardless of purpose.

For all joint or contracted projects or sub-projects, only the portion of the center research performed by faculty, staff, and students of the affiliated engineering school should be credited to that school. Expenditures for capital costs of research laboratory building construction should not be included.

Expenditures for research laboratory renovations should not be included unless the renovation funds expended came from grants and contracts expressly intended for the direct support of engineering research.

Any portion of academic year and/or summer salary for any researcher that is not derived from external research grants or contracts should not be counted.

Total #: Report total number of individual grants, not the total dollar amount of the expenditures.

Expenditures: Report actual expenditures (as opposed to authorization amounts) in U.S. dollars.

Time frame for expenditures: Report expenditures for your current fiscal year.

Research centers listed as "WITHIN an engineering department" on the Research Centers page (screen 7) of the College of Engineering Profile, will not have their expenditures added to the school's total research expenditures. Such expenditures can be included in the department total, while still being listed for the appropriate center. This allows users to list the expenditures in two areas without double-counting.
