Research Description By Engineering Research Center

Center for Innovations in Transportation Infrastructure, Efficiency and Sustainability (CITIES)

Six universities have formed a UTC Consortium named Center for Innovations in Transportation Infrastructure, Efficiency and Sustainability (CITIES) with the main focus on one of the national transportation issues identified by the FAST Act’s six research priority areas: Reducing Congestion. True to its acronym, CITIES focuses on innovative, effective, efficient, high-tech-savvy, sustainable solutions to combat urban traffic congestion. San Diego State University leads the consortium that also includes: Navajo Technological University, University of Minnesota, University of Texas, Dallas, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, and Virginia Tech University. All members of our Consortium have considerable record of publications, leadership, collaboration, education and work force development in this area. CITIES researchers focus on three major focus areas. The first major area will be Congestion (Value) Pricing and Managed Lanes applied research. Assessments studies performed across the country within the Congestion Pricing and Value Pricing Pilot program brought some important lessons that can and should be shared with several metropolitan areas in US that suffer from severe congestion. Our study examines the effectiveness of managed lane projects in San Diego, Minneapolis-St. Paul, and Dallas, and share the results nationwide. The second major focus area of CITIES is border crossing congestion and ways to reduce it. Locations of both SDSU campuses at the southern border of US will make this research natural to perform. Our partners in New Mexico, Texas and Minnesota perform similar studies at border crossings in their states to account for a more complete picture and more generalized conclusions. The third major focus area of our UTC is on operations, controls and devices that are emerging as potentially very effective solutions to combat congestion. Our projects in this general area focuses on state-of-the-art solutions to work zone congestion, integrated control system for urban freeway corridors, and management of major planned events like the annual Navajo Fair.

Center for Sensorimotor Neural Engineering

In recent years, there has been major progress on implantable biomedical systems that support most of the functionalities of wireless implantable devices. We are working on the design of an implantable wireless communication system for the measurement of neural signals in the brain with a collaborative effort with University of Washington. The multidisciplinary project involves faculty from all ERC/SNE research groups. Our research projects include the design and validation of electrodes for EEG measurement, sensors for measuring joint motion and EMG, and robotic assistive braces for arms and legs. All of these are multidisciplinary projects involving faculty from all signature areas maintained through the ERC/SNE collaboration.

Education and research efforts in Neural Engineering at SDSU focus on the adaptive closed-loop interaction between the human nervous systems and sensorimotor devices. This involves the merging of understanding how biological systems acquire and process information with the design of effective biomedical devices that interact seamlessly with human beings. These efforts concentrate on course development in bio-inspired robotics, neural devices, and BCI (brain-computer interface). As mentioned earlier under Biomechanics, in the long-term we wish to tackle complex problems involving the development of technology for patients with neuromuscular dysfunction including the design and control of prosthetic limbs, and how these may be optimized by using biosignal sensors, wireless systems, and smart feedback.

Communications Systems and Signal Processing Institute

Radio frequency systems and digital signal processing. RF ciruitry, modems, receivers, transmitters, synthesizers, A-D and D-A converters, DSP algorithms and hardware implementations, antennae, and computer networks.

Concrete Research Institute

The Concrete Research Institute supports educational needs in civil engineering curriculum and concrete research performed for sponsors from industry and governments. The institute encompasses a wide range of topics. The main emphasis is currently on concrete materials and structures. Civil and environmental engineering faculty members are involved with finding optimum design solutions in bridges, seismic resistant structures, residential buildings, and retaining walls.

Energy Engineering Institute

The Energy Engineering Institute has supported educational and research activities in energy-related areas since 1985. Undergraduate and graduate students and faculty from the mechanical engineering and electrical and computer engineering departments are involved in obtaining solutions to problems presented by industrial sponsors. Institute research projects cover a wide range of areas from optimizing energy resources to international energy studies.
