Degree Requirements

Bachelor's Degree Requirements

A minimum of 125-129 semester credit hours (SCH) are required for all B.S. degrees offered by the college (125 SCH for BME, 128 SCH for CE, 126 SCH for Computer Engineering, 126 SCH for EE, and 128 SCH for ME). Entering students should enroll in AIS 1203, Freshman Seminar, as early as possible, preferably during their first year at UTSA. The purpose of this course is to help students choose the appropriate area of engineering and to be successful in their chosen area. During their first semester, students should specify their interest in a specific engineering program by selecting civil, computer, electrical, or mechanical engineering as a major. Undecided engineering students should select a major closest to their area of interest. Students may obtain additional information about each program from the College Advising Center office or a faculty advisor in the appropriate discipline. Since the first year of study is similar for all engineering programs, changing majors in the first semester normally can be accomplished with minimum loss of credit. Prerequisites for CE, CpE, EE, ME, and EGR courses must be completed with a grade of C- or better. Students must satisfy the University's Core Curriculum and ABET accreditation requirements. Recommended degree plans and current ABET requirements may be obtained from the College of Engineering Advising Center.

Master's Degree Requirements

A minimum of 30-36 semester credit hours (SCH) is required for all M.S. degrees (BME,CE,Computer Eng, EE, AMEE and ME) offered by the college. Both thesis and non-thesis options are available for completing a M.S. degree. A minimum of 30-31 SCH (30 for CE Computer Eng, EE and ME, and 30.5 for BME) are required for a thesis option degree and a minimum of 33-36 SCH (33 for Computer Eng, EE and ME, 34 for CE) are required for a non-thesis-option degree. At least 24 credit hours must be completed at UTSA. Candidates are required to pass a comprehensive examination and /or a thesis defense administered by the student's advisory committee, chaired by a full-time graduate faculty member. An average GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) is required in all work counted as part of the degree program. No course in which grades of less than "C" (below 2.0 on a 4.0 scale) were earned may be applied to a graduate degree.

Doctoral Degree Requirements

A minimum of 75-90 semester credit hours (SCH) is required for all Doctoral students with an undergraduate degree (81 SCH for BME, 90 SCH for EE and 75 SCH for ESE). A minimum of 50-60 SCH is required for all Doctoral tudents with a Master’s degree (BME course credits allowed for transfer will be decided on a case-by-case basis by the Biomedical Engineering Committee on Graduate Studies (COGS), and a minimum of 60 SCH required for EE and ESE). Doctoral students are required to spend at least two consecutive semesters in residence as a full-time student taking a minimum of 9 SCH each residence semester. A grade point average of “B” (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) must be maintained. All students seeking a doctoral degree must pass qualifying examination and successfully defend doctoral dissertation.
Doctoral students have a time-to-degree-completion of eight years comprised of six years from admission to candidacy and two years for dissertation. Students may obtain additional information about each program from the graduate catalog or the Graduate Advisor of Record in the appropriate discipline.
