The engineering college has an orientation program for first year students. Faculty advisors are assigned to both first year students and upper class students. Tutoring is available for individuals. Peer mentors are assigned to each first year student. Career education and development is available through Career Services. A program for international students is available. Student health services and psychological counseling are free of charge.

Student Design Projects Description

All programs require a capstone design course. In addition, the Mechanical Engineering Department, Materials Science and Engineering Department, and Bioengineering Program have a solid program, with a long history, which is a senior design experience entitled, "Integrated Product Development (IPD)" that involves both departments and other engineering students as well as students from the College of Business and Economics and Design Arts students in the College of Arts and Sciences. All first year engineering students take a course that includes two design projects and a presentation by all departments describing the programs that they administer.

Engineering College Description and Special Characteristics

To fulfill varied and changing roles of scientists and engineers, students must learn to appreciate not only the power of technology but also its impact on people. The academic programs of this college are designed to insure that the student achieves technical proficiency and an awareness of the broader scientific and human values under which technologies are developed and applied. Students learn the concepts of creative and disciplined problem-solving that can later be applied to their professional and personal lives. Special initiatives for undergraduates include, for example, research projects under faculty guidance. Programs in arts/engineering, and science, technology and society are also available.

Undergraduate Admission to the College of Engineering

Students who plan to enroll in the College of Engineering and Applied Science must have studied Mathematics through Trigonometry and should have studied Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics through pre-Calculus. Calculus is recommended.

Entrance Requirements for Foreign Students

TOEFL of 570 (paper based scores), minimum target score of 90 on the Internet-based TOEFL or iBT is recommended. Other requirements are the same as for domestic students.

Residency Requirements

Transfer students are not required to live on Campus.
All transfer students must complete the last 30 credits in residence at Lehigh University.

Admissions Requirements for Transfer Students

Lehigh University prefers its transfers to have a minimum grade point average of 3.25 or higher. For those applying to the College of Engineering & Applied Science, in addition to having a 3.25 grade point average, it is strongly urged that all candidates successfully complete Calculus I and calculus-based chemistry. Should students decide to complete Physics, a calculus-based course is required. Lehigh will evaluate courses with grades of "C" or higher (grades of "C-" are not accepted in transfer.)

Admissions Information

Graduate Admission to the College of Engineering

A graduate of an accredited college or university may be considered. An undergraduate GPA of at least 2.75/4.00 is required. The decision to admit a student rests with the applicant's proposed program and stands for one year following the first semester for which admission was offered. After one year, the department reserves the right to reconsider the original offer. Applicant may enter the graduate program as a regular, non-degree, or an associate graduate student.

Graduate Admission to an Engineering Department

Applications for admission must be filled out electronically via the internet.

Entrance Requirements for Foreign Students

Either the Internet-based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Test System) is required for all graduate students whose FIRST language is not English. All international students must show proof of English proficiency to be admitted to Lehigh. There are minimum individual section and composite levels that applicants must attain in order to be admitted to the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering & Applied Science graduate programs without conditional English enhancement training.

The following text was offered to each school as a guideline for the calculation of externally-funded research expenditures:

Include all expenditures associated with grants and contracts specifically budgeted for externally sponsored research and associated programs and expenditures associated with all gifts auditably used for research. Include expended funds provided by the following external sources:

  1. Federal Government
  2. State Government
  3. Foreign Governments
  4. Industry
  5. Non-Profit Organizations (e.g. foundations)
  6. Individuals
  7. Local Government

The expenditures reported should be only those funds provided by organizations, agencies, and individuals external to the institution. Cost sharing/matching funds should be included only if provided from sources external to the institution.

Only State government funds that were obtained competitively or as matching funds associated with other externally funded programs should be included. State funds that are part of the normal operating budget should not be included regardless of purpose.

For all joint or contracted projects or sub-projects, only the portion of the center research performed by faculty, staff, and students of the affiliated engineering school should be credited to that school. Expenditures for capital costs of research laboratory building construction should not be included.

Expenditures for research laboratory renovations should not be included unless the renovation funds expended came from grants and contracts expressly intended for the direct support of engineering research.

Any portion of academic year and/or summer salary for any researcher that is not derived from external research grants or contracts should not be counted.

Total #: Report total number of individual grants, not the total dollar amount of the expenditures.

Expenditures: Report actual expenditures (as opposed to authorization amounts) in U.S. dollars.

Time frame for expenditures: Report expenditures for your current fiscal year.

Research centers listed as "WITHIN an engineering department" on the Research Centers page (screen 7) of the College of Engineering Profile, will not have their expenditures added to the school's total research expenditures. Such expenditures can be included in the department total, while still being listed for the appropriate center. This allows users to list the expenditures in two areas without double-counting.
