Requirements

For regular admission as PSU freshmen, students must: have graduated from a standard or accredited high school; must complete college preparatory work of four years English, three years mathematics, two years science, 3 years social studies, and two years of foreign language; have a 3.0 grade point average in all graded subjects taken toward graduation in four years of high school. Must submit SAT or ACT scores. Alternative admissions criteria for those not meeting above standards can be seen at http://www.pdx.edu/admissions/

For admission to graduate studies with regular status, applicants must: present a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 in all undergraduate courses or a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 in all graduate credit earned at accredited institutions (minimum of 12 credits); meet any departmental requirements; and pass TOEFL with a minimum score of 550 if their native language is not English and they did not receive their baccalaureate degree from a U.S. institution.
To be admitted as a graduate student on conditional status, the applicant must present a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 in all undergraduate courses.

Student Design Projects Description

Undergraduate students in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Computer Engineering complete a senior course sequence that includes instruction in design methods and the completion of a substantial, open-ended design project. Undergraduate students in Computer Science complete a senior project in software engineering. In all cases, student work in groups with a faculty member and a customer, typically from industry.

Engineering College Description and Special Characteristics

The Fariborz Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science at Portland State University evolved in parallel with the growth of the high-tech industry in Oregon. Located in the heart of the “Silicon Forest,” the College's deep connection to Portland's thriving tech, transportation and sustainability sectors give students a one-of-a-kind opportunity to jump-start their careers. Location and dedicated support services provide Maseeh College students with many advantages including an array of internships and networking opportunities and other benefits of an urban campus.

Maseeh College undergraduate students are able to participate in many unique offerings including paid research opportunities and community-based learning projects. In the spirit of Portland’s vibrant entrepreneurial culture, the College also provides funding and technological resources for students to develop new ideas from proposal to prototype through its signature Innovation Program.

Admissions/Transfers

Undergraduate Admission to the College of Engineering

Engineering majors must be admitted formally to a specific degree program in civil engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or mechanical engineering before they will 1) be allowed to enroll in restricted upper division courses by the school and 2) be graduated from that program. Application forms may be obtained from the Dean's Office, School of Engineering and Applied Science.

Undergraduate Admission to an Engineering Department

Engineering students are admitted to the engineering school at the end of their sophomore year. The engineering departments require a minimum GPA of 2.25 in all engineering course work at the end of the sophomore year and all grades must be C or better.

Entrance Requirements for Non-Resident Students

No special requirements

Residency Requirements

Students must complete (a) 45 of the final 60 credits or (b) 165 of the total credits at PSU.

Admissions Requirements for Transfer Students

Transfer students must meet all eligibility requirements (see "College Admission Information"); apply for admission to PSU; apply for program admission to the School of Engineering and Applied Science; and have one copy of transcripts sent to the Office of Admissions.

Graduate Admission to an Engineering Department

In addition to meeting general University admission requirements applicants are required to have a baccalaureate degree in engineering or related discipline, background in probability/statistics, computer programming, differential equations and four years of professional experience. Past academic and professional performance is judged for acceptance. Check the individual department websites for specific requirements.

Entrance Requirements for Foreign Students

Must score 550 or greater on the TOEFL.

Entrance Requirements for Non-Resident Students

No different than residents.

Residency Requirements

In a master's program, a minimum of two-thirds of the required credits in courses must be earned on the PSU campus. In a doctoral program, a minimum of three consecutive terms must be spent in full-time residence.

The following text was offered to each school as a guideline for the calculation of externally-funded research expenditures:

Include all expenditures associated with grants and contracts specifically budgeted for externally sponsored research and associated programs and expenditures associated with all gifts auditably used for research. Include expended funds provided by the following external sources:

  1. Federal Government
  2. State Government
  3. Foreign Governments
  4. Industry
  5. Non-Profit Organizations (e.g. foundations)
  6. Individuals
  7. Local Government

The expenditures reported should be only those funds provided by organizations, agencies, and individuals external to the institution. Cost sharing/matching funds should be included only if provided from sources external to the institution.

Only State government funds that were obtained competitively or as matching funds associated with other externally funded programs should be included. State funds that are part of the normal operating budget should not be included regardless of purpose.

For all joint or contracted projects or sub-projects, only the portion of the center research performed by faculty, staff, and students of the affiliated engineering school should be credited to that school. Expenditures for capital costs of research laboratory building construction should not be included.

Expenditures for research laboratory renovations should not be included unless the renovation funds expended came from grants and contracts expressly intended for the direct support of engineering research.

Any portion of academic year and/or summer salary for any researcher that is not derived from external research grants or contracts should not be counted.

Total #: Report total number of individual grants, not the total dollar amount of the expenditures.

Expenditures: Report actual expenditures (as opposed to authorization amounts) in U.S. dollars.

Time frame for expenditures: Report expenditures for your current fiscal year.

Research centers listed as "WITHIN an engineering department" on the Research Centers page (screen 7) of the College of Engineering Profile, will not have their expenditures added to the school's total research expenditures. Such expenditures can be included in the department total, while still being listed for the appropriate center. This allows users to list the expenditures in two areas without double-counting.
