Entrance Requirements and Recommendations


High School Courses required for freshmen:
History/Social Science: 2 years required.
English (4 years required).
Mathematics: 3 years required; 4 years recommended.
Laboratory Science: 2 years required; 3 years recommended.
Language Other Than English: 2 years required; 3 years recommended.
Visual and Performing Arts: 1 year required.
College Preparatory Electives: 1 year required.

Examination Requirements:
The SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT Assessment With Writing.
SAT Subject Tests are no longer be required for admission. However, submission of SAT Subject Test scores may add positively to the review of a student's application. SAT Subject Test in math Level 2 is recommended for freshmen applicants in engineering majors.

Scholarship Requirement:
The minimum GPA is 3.0 for California residents and 3.4 for nonresidents. Refer to UCI General Catalogue for exact requirements.

3.0/4.0 Bachelor's Degree minimum cumulative GPA, Graduate Record Exam General Test Scores, Personal Statement & 3 letters of recommendation. TOEFL pbT/ibT or IELTS required for non-native English speakers (some exceptions apply). Students should check with individual programs as some have required prerequisites.


Undergraduate Applicants: Honors courses and advanced placement courses; submission of SAT Reasoning Test (or ACT Assessment With Writing); language other than English (3 years); laboratory science (3 years); mathematics (4 years). Students applying to The Henry Samueli School of Engineering are strongly encouraged to take the Math Level 2 SAT Subject exam.
