Student Design Projects Description

All senior students in the Electrical, Mechanical, Biomedical, and Industrial & Systems Engineering programs participate in multidisciplinary design teams to complete a two-semester capstone project. Teams may also include Computer Engineering majors, as well as students from outside the College of Engineering. Teams are typically composed of four to eight members, with one student appointed team leader. Many team leaders complete the Design Project Leadership course prior to the project initiation, which builds skills in leadership, project planning, project management, and systems engineering. All teams have a faculty mentor who works with them on a weekly basis. Formal project reviews by faculty, sponsors, and industry representatives are conducted every 3 weeks. Project proposals are solicited from faculty throughout the university as well as from industrial associates and external organizations. Each proposal is reviewed by a multidisciplinary faculty coordinating team to estimate the required project skills, scope, and academic fit.
