Requirements

The University of Delaware seeks academically ambitious and creative applicants from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds and geographic regions. As the Admissions Committee evaluates an application for admission, it weighs the rigor of the student's high school course selection, academic record (especially the trend in grades), SAT I and/or ACT scores, student essays, letters of recommendation, and personal statement.

The SAT II (subject) tests are recommended for all freshman applicants, especially those applying to the Honors Program, and if these scores are submitted, the Admissions Committee considers them in making the admissions decision.

The Admissions Committee does not consider financial need in the admissions process.

The University expects all applicants to have completed strong college preparatory course work at an accredited secondary school or certified home school program, including at least 18 credits of post-eighth-grade course work in: English, 4 years; Mathematics, 3 years (4 years recommended); Science, 3 years, 2 must include a lab (4 years recommended, 3 years with a lab recommended); History/Social Sciences, 4 years (at least 2 of the units must be history and 1 of those must be world history); Foreign Languages, 2 years of same (4 years of same recommended); Academic Electives, 2 units. An additional year of math or science may be substituted for the 4th year of history/social science. Foreign language courses taken before the ninth grade do not count. Some programs at the University require additional preparation in math and science. Prospective majors in engineering should have completed 4 years of mathematics, including trigonometry, pre-calculus, and/or calculus. Prospective majors in engineering are strongly urged to take physics, chemistry, and biology.

Recommendations

The University recognizes competencies attained through its courses, through courses completed in secondary school, and through independent study. Students who earn scores of 3, 4 or 5 on Advanced Placement tests may earn credit for special competencies.
