Entrance Requirements and Recommendations

Requirements

Freshman candidates are evaluated on the rigor of their high school course work, their grades and their scores from standardized tests. A personal resume, an essay, and school recommendations also play important roles in the admission decision. Consideration is given to honors courses, Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate work when assessing grade point averages. Students are considered individually on the merits of their academic record, personal qualities and potential for success in the field of interest. Students are expected to have completed at least 16 year-long courses, including 13 in academic solids and up to three in acceptable electives.

Master of Science candidates are evaluated on their performance as an undergraduate student and in any other graduate-level coursework completed. The GRE exam is also taken into consideration. Due to the differences in various engineering disciplines, some programs will require additional materials such as statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, and resume.

Doctoral programs candidates need to demonstrate exceptional performance in their undergraduate career and in any other graduate coursework completed. Research experience is essential and candidates should have an understanding of the faculty members conducting research in the applicant's area of interest. Statement of purpose, resume are also required.

Recommendations

Recommendations, including those from teachers and/high school counselors, play an important role in the admission decision.

Recommendation letters are required for some Master of Science programs. For those programs that do not require recommendations, applicants are still welcome to submit them and they will be taken into consideration.

Recommendation letters are required for PhD candidates.

USC Formula SAE
We are the University of Southern California chapter of Formula SAE (FSAE). We are an entirely student-run organization that designs, constructs, tests, and races high performance autocross racecars. Every year we compete against universities from across the globe in an ultimate test of our car’s abilities. Winning teams combine cutting-edge research and analysis with skilled hands-on manufacturing. Teams must also be highly organized and present a business case for their car to a panel of industry judges. By taking students out of the classroom and allowing them to apply textbook theories to real-world problems, Formula SAE produces some of the most talented and highly desired graduates in the country.

USC Hyperloop team
USC Hyperloop was founded in 2015 with the main focus to build a Hyperloop Pod to win the SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition. The long term vision is to allow youthful, energetic engineers the opportunity to contribute to the advancement of knowledge for the design of a high-speed transportation system capable of speeds up to 900km/h for California, the United States, and the rest of the world.

USC Recumbent Vehicle Design Team
The USC Recumbent Vehicle Design Team (RVDT) is focused on producing vehicles for the ASME Human Powered Vehicle Challenge. The goal of this challenge is to provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate the application of sound engineering design principles in the development of sustainable and practical transportation alternatives. The team travels every year to the annual competition to compete against universities from across the country.

College Description

Engineering College Description and Special Characteristics

Undergraduates are able to begin their engineering coursework in the freshman year and are admitted as freshmen to the major, and are provided opportunities to become involved in research. Students can also enter the School as an Undeclared engineering major and participate in an overview course which introduces all engineering majors prior to committing to the major. Undergraduates can also minor in a variety of minors throughout the university or within 16minors within the Viterbi School of Engineering. A variety of special programs and services are offered in support of undergraduate students. The USC Viterbi School of Engineering also supports an interactive Distance Education Network designed to enable part-time students to take courses for graduate credit without commuting frequently to campus. Regular campus classes and non-credit continuing education courses are transmitted from studio classrooms at the USC campus via an extensive webcast system to enable students to access their classes anytime, from anywhere. Live instruction can be highly interactive; students can ask questions and carry on discussions with the instructor by telephone (if watching live) or via threaded online chat discussions. Video conferencing during live instruction is also available upon request. Lectures are archived and are available for viewing again at any time during the semester. E-mail allows students to obtain assistance from the instructor or teaching assistant outside of class hours. Class materials are transferred electronically between distant locations.

Admissions/Transfers

Undergraduate Admission to the College of Engineering

Engineering students may be admitted to the engineering school at time of admission to the University. Students can also apply and be admitted to Undeclared Engineering. Strong SAT/ACT and strong high school record in math and science are required.High school students should have completed or have Calculus in progress and have completed or in progress, four years of a lab science. Students may also change major into the School of Engineering once at USC after completing specific course requirements and an internal admission application.

Entrance Requirements for Foreign Students

TOEFL, IELTS or PTE is required. Otherwise, all requirements are the same as for domestic students.

Residency Requirements

Must complete at least 64 units and all upper-division coursework at USC. Students participating in the 3/2 Program have a 48 unit residency requirement.

Admissions Requirements for Transfer Students

Minimum 30 semester units with at least a B average on specific math, science and engineering courses. Students with a strong record in engineering core coursework stand a better chance of being admitted.

Graduate Admission to the College of Engineering

Graduate Admission to the College of Engineering
For admission consideration, Master of Science (M.S.) and Engineer's degree, candidates must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited or recognized institution in a related engineering field, science or mathematics. Applications are recommended to have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of3.00 on a 4 point scale (or the equivalent for international applicants) and satisfactory GRE scores on the General Test. Candidates for admission to the Engineer degree must have a GPA of a least 3.2 from a qualifying master's program, in addition to the above requirements. Ph.D. applicants must have a superior gpa, at least 3.5 in most departments; superior GRE scores; a personal statement of academic and research goals; demonstrated ability and experience in performing scholarly research; and three letters of recommendation. Deadlines for Masters programs are January 15 for the following Fall semester and September 15 for Spring. Deadlines for the Ph.D. programs are December 15 for the following Fall; and September 15 for Spring.

Graduate Admission to an Engineering Department

Residency Requirements

4 semester units may be transferred toward an MS degree or Engineer degree from another institution with advisor approval; the remaining units must be taken in residency. A maximum of 30 units from a qualifying Master's degree may be transferred toward the Ph.D. degree; at least 24 units plus dissertation units must be taken in residency at USC.

Admissions Requirements for Transfer Students

At most 4 units may be transferred toward an MS degree at USC from another institution. All other units must be taken at USC.
For the Engineer degree 26 of 30 units must be taken at USC. At least 24 units, including dissertation, must be taken at USC for the Ph.D. degree.

Include all expenditures associated with grants and contracts specifically budgeted for externally sponsored research and associated programs and expenditures associated with all gifts auditably used for research. Include expended funds provided by the following external sources:

  1. Federal Government
  2. State Government
  3. Foreign Governments
  4. Industry
  5. Non-Profit Organizations (e.g. foundations)
  6. Individuals
  7. Local Government

The expenditures reported should be only those funds provided by organizations, agencies, and individuals external to the institution. Cost sharing/matching funds should be included only if provided from sources external to the institution.

Only State government funds that were obtained competitively or as matching funds associated with other externally funded programs should be included. State funds that are part of the normal operating budget should not be included regardless of purpose.

For all joint or contracted projects or sub-projects, only the portion of the center research performed by faculty, staff, and students of the affiliated engineering school should be credited to that school. Expenditures for capital costs of research laboratory building construction should not be included.

Expenditures for research laboratory renovations should not be included unless the renovation funds expended came from grants and contracts expressly intended for the direct support of engineering research.

Any portion of academic year and/or summer salary for any researcher that is not derived from external research grants or contracts should not be counted.

Expenditures: Report actual expenditures (as opposed to authorization amounts) in U.S. dollars.

Research centers listed as "WITHIN an engineering department" on the Research Centers page (screen 7) of the College of Engineering Profile, will not have their expenditures added to the school's total research expenditures. Biomimetic MicroElectronic Systems Center

The BMES is devoted to the science and engineering of novel biomimetic microelectronic systems (BMES) based on fundamental principles of biology. Center for Genomic and Phenomic Studies in Autism

A multi-institution team led by USC faculty has received a five-year, $8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for an ambitious effort to survey the genetic, physical and behavioral profiles of children with autism. The grant vastly will increase the reach and ethnic diversity of the Autism Genetic Resource Exchange (AGRE), the world’s largest resource for autism research overseen by Clara Lajonchere, research assistant professor in biomedical engineering at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, who has a joint appointment at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. The NIH money will double the number of families studied and expand the data beyond genetic and clinical profiles to include what the researchers call phenomics: the systematic study of the outward physical and behavioral marks of autism. One goal of the center is to better distinguish among the many forms of autism and to explore the differences in their genetic profiles. Another unique aspect of the grant is a program of pilot studies to evaluate potential environmental factors in autism such as air pollution or disease and diet during pregnancy. The overarching vision for the Center for Rapid Automated Fabrication Technologies (CRAFT) is to develop the science and engineering needed for rapid automated fabrication of objects of various size up to mega-scale structures such as, boats, industrial objects, public art and whole building structures. The grand challenge for CRAFT is building a custom-designed house in a day while drastically reducing the costs, injuries, waste and environmental impact associated with traditional construction techniques. The vision is a revolution in housing construction, whether it be to provide affordable housing for the 30 million U.S. households facing cost burdens or overcrowding; emergency housing for victims of disasters; extraterrestrial buildings constructed from in situ materials; new styles of housing based on curved organic designs rather than straight surfaces; or inexpensive first ownership housing for an emerging middle class in the developing world. Since 1993, USC's Center for Software Engineering (CSE) has won a national reputation for a unique approach to the problems of building large-scale IT systems to solve complex problems of management and control, inspired by the vision of systems engineering pioneers like Eberhardt Rechtin. Products and concepts like the spiral model, COCOMO, and COSYSMO, developed at USC, have become part of the working vocabulary of technology across the nation and the world. Companies, government agencies and others who must plan and create, on time and on budget, huge new systems and software projects know the value of the approach, and participate as Affiliates in our programs. Our collaboration with these Affiliates on groundbreaking systems of systems and enterprise support systems of the future caused us to realize that we needed to reinvent and extend the spiral model and COCOMO family of estimation models, and to experiment with new architectures to support massively distributed and mobile systems of systems. Integrated Media Systems Center

The Integrated Media Systems Center (IMSC) was established in 1996 through a competitive process resulting in an 11-year, US $32 million grant from the National Science Foundation. The only NSF center of excellence in multimedia and the Internet, IMSC carries out a pioneering, cross-disciplinary program of research, education, outreach, industry collaboration and technology transfer. Over the past decade, IMSC has become a worldwide leader within this burgeoning field, and is leading the way in advancing the software and hardware framework to create immersive environments in which people can interact, communicate and collaborate naturally in a shared virtual space.
IMSC has developed such unique immersive technologies as three-dimensional face modeling and animation, immersivision panoramic video technology, and the world's most advanced immersive audio. Major progress has also been made in haptics - touch-related technologies that have enormous potential for advancing health care and improving lives - as well as data compression and wireless communications. IMSC's integrated research approach is progressing toward Immersipresence, the Center's vision for the future of the Internet. IMSC views Immersipresence as the next great breakthrough in our digital era that will dramatically change our world within this decade, transforming our two-dimensional world of computers, television and film into three-dimensional immersive environments.
Having completed its NSF funding, and under the new leadership of Prof. Cyrus Shahabi, IMSC is focusing on a new vision "Geo-Immersion: Geo-realistic Virtualization of Urban Environments." Geo-Immersion is a new computing paradigm that enables humans to capture, model, integrate, and query static and dynamic data from the real world in real time at fidelities not previously available. A Geo-Immersive world is an ultra-high resolution virtual world that is geographically accurate, enables efficient querying and analyses of dynamic data, and supports interactivity from a variety of interface modalities. National Center for Metropolitan Transportation Research (METRANS)

METRANS -- the National Center for Metropolitan Transportation Research - is a University Transportation Center funded by the US Department of Transportation and the California Department of Transportation. Our mission is solving transportation problems of large metropolitan areas through interdisciplinary research, education and outreach. METRANS conducts research in four focus areas. The main focus is goods movement and international trade, accounting for about half of all METRANS research and most of METRANS outreach and information dissemination activities. The second focus area is mobility of urban populations, with special emphasis on public transportation, and accounting for about one third of METRANS research. Highway infrastructure, and safety, security and vulnerability are relatively new topic areas. METRANS is based at University of Southern California and includes California State University, Long Beach, as a member. NIH Resource on Medical Ultrasonic Transducer Technology

The Resource Center for Medical Ultrasonic Transducer Technology is dedicated to the design, modeling, fabrication and testing of high-frequency ultrasonic transducers and arrays, and supporting electronics. In a third renewal of a grant first given in 1997, Kirk Shung, professor of biomedical engineering at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, has been awarded a $6 million National Institutes of Health grant to continue work on high frequency ultrasonic transducer technology. Shung said the new grant will allow researchers to further increase the linear array frequency to achieve even better spatial resolution and make it possible to view smaller structures. A high frequency phased array also will be developed to image the heart of a small animal. This phased array will produce a beam that is steerable and have a smaller aperture or footprint, required for imaging the heart, which is enclosed by the rib cage. Director: Dr. K. Kirk Shung.

The Photonics Center at the University of Southern California School of Engineering is internationally recognized for its contributions to commercial telecommunications and data communications as well as myriad applications in radar and sensing. Signal & Image Processing Institute

The USC Signal and Image Processing Institute (SIPI) was one of the first research organizations in the world dedicated to image processing. The Institute recently celebrated its 40th creative year. During the 1970s, researchers at SIPI concentrated on the basic theory of image processing and applications to image de-blurring, image coding and feature extraction. Much of the early work on transform coding, now the basis of the JPEG and MPEG standards for still and video image compression and transmission, was conducted within SIPI. In the years since, SIPI has expanded its research scope to include many aspects of signal and image processing theory and applications.

Research in SIPI has been at the forefront of signal processing with fundamental work on the development of signal processing theory based on higher-order statistics, fuzzy logic and artificial neural networks. SIPI researchers are also active in the design of VLSI, optical and opto-electronic systems for fast implementation of signal processing algorithms. Faculty in SIPI are involved in applying state of the art signal processing techniques to a wide range of real world problems. Recent applications include medical imaging, array signal processing, immersive audio, video image compression and other multimedia related technologies. Faculty and students in SIPI have access to a number of world class facilities including image compression, immersive audio, and optical computing labs. Facilities for fabrication of microelectronic and electro-optical devices and a network of workstations and computers provide a rich infrastructure for research in signal and image processing. Research at the TCC Institute for Emissions Reduction in Marine Diesel Engines (TIER-MDE) is sponsored by the vision of Mr. Kenneth Koo, Chairman and CEO of Tai Chong Cheang (TCC) Steamship Co. The Institute is performing research on a fundamentally new approach to reducing harmful emissions and greenhouse gases, while also improving combustion efficiency in large two-stroke low-rpm marine diesel engines that power the bulk of the world’s merchant ships. The goal is to apply transient plasma generated by nano-second pulsed power (high-voltage pulses applied over nanoseconds) to improve the ignition and combustion process. Tsunami Research Center

The USC Tsunami Research Center (TRC) is actively involved with all aspects of tsunami research; inundation field surveys, numerical and analytical modeling, and hazard assessment, mitigation and planning. The Center has developed the tsunami inundation maps for California and the tsunami code MOST, now used by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. MOST is the only validated code used in the US for tsunami hazard mapping with detailed inundation predictions. TRC faculty and students have surveyed all except one of the “modern” tsunamis since 1992, and have been working on mega-tsunami surveys for the 1946 Aleutian and 1956 Amorgos, Greece events.
