Degree Requirements

Bachelor's Degree Requirements

Unit requirements for B.S. degrees vary from 128 to 136 units. All degrees contain required courses in general education, writing, math and at least two basic sciences, in addition to courses in core engineering areas, depending on the major. A senior project is required in most majors.

Master's Degree Requirements

M.S. degrees require from 27 to 33 units of advisor approved course work with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 (4.00 scale) for graduation. Required courses and restricted electives vary by program. Thesis and non-thesis options are available. A limited number of directed research units, completed under close faculty supervision, may be counted toward the degree. At most 4 semester units may be transferred from another institution. Several Master of Engineering degrees are also offered.

Doctoral Degree Requirements

The Ph.D. degree requires at least 60 units of advisor approved course work beyond the bachelor's degree with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 (4.00 scale); the screening examination; the qualifying examination; an acceptable dissertation based on original independent research under direct faculty supervision and showing a scholarly result.
