Degree Requirements

Bachelor's Degree Requirements

There are five categories of degree requirements that comprise an undergraduate degree at Hopkins:

1. Total degree credit requirement (ranges from 120-129)
2. Residency requirement (minimum 100 JHU credits for freshmen who matriculated in the Fall of 2014 or later)
3. Distribution requirements
4. Writing requirement
5. Departmental major requirements (and minor requirements, if applicable)

The University requires a minimum GPA of 2.00 in the area of the major.

Master's Degree Requirements

Masters students enrolled in the full-time programs are required to complete two semesters of full-time residency, or its equivalent, as a graduate student. In certain departments a thesis, essay or capstone project may be used for partial fulfillment of requirements. Course requirements vary with each department.

Doctoral Degree Requirements

Two consecutive semesters of full-time residency is required. A master's degree is not required. A dissertation approved by at least two approved referees submitted for publication and successful completion of a Graduate Board oral exam is required. Course and other requirements vary with each department.
