Admissions/Transfers

Undergraduate Admission to the College of Engineering

Prospective engineering students are admitted to the engineering college when they are admitted to the university. Factors in the admission selection process include the rigor of high school courses, grades, class rank, and standardized test scores, personal talents and extracurricular activities. As preparation, the following courses are recommended: four years of English, four years of mathematics, three to four years of history and social sciences, three to four years of laboratory sciences (chemistry, physics), at least two years of a foreign language.

Undergraduate Admission to an Engineering Department

There are no special department admission requirements or restrictions.

Entrance Requirements for Foreign Students

In addition to the same entrance requirements as for US students, foreign students for whom English is not their first language must submit the results of the TOEFL.

Entrance Requirements for Non-Resident Students

Same as for resident students.

Residency Requirements

All students seeking any bachelor's degree must complete a minimum of 30 units of upper-level (numbered 300 or higher) engineering courses from our engineering school. In addition, students must complete a minimum of 60 units while matriculated at Washington University in a degree program.

Admissions Requirements for Transfer Students

Transfer admission decisions rest heavily upon applicants' most recent academic work at an accredited college. The strongest candidates for admission present at least a B+ average in courses across a broad academic curriculum with a strong background in mathematics(calculus) and science. Applicants should have completed at least one year elsewhere.

Include all expenditures associated with grants and contracts specifically budgeted for externally sponsored research and associated programs and expenditures associated with all gifts auditably used for research. Include expended funds provided by the following external sources:

  1. Federal Government
  2. State Government
  3. Foreign Governments
  4. Industry
  5. Non-Profit Organizations (e.g. foundations)
  6. Individuals
  7. Local Government

The expenditures reported should be only those funds provided by organizations, agencies, and individuals external to the institution. Cost sharing/matching funds should be included only if provided from sources external to the institution.

Only State government funds that were obtained competitively or as matching funds associated with other externally funded programs should be included. State funds that are part of the normal operating budget should not be included regardless of purpose.

For all joint or contracted projects or sub-projects, only the portion of the center research performed by faculty, staff, and students of the affiliated engineering school should be credited to that school. Expenditures for capital costs of research laboratory building construction should not be included.

Expenditures for research laboratory renovations should not be included unless the renovation funds expended came from grants and contracts expressly intended for the direct support of engineering research.

Any portion of academic year and/or summer salary for any researcher that is not derived from external research grants or contracts should not be counted.

Expenditures: Report actual expenditures (as opposed to authorization amounts) in U.S. dollars.

Research centers listed as "WITHIN an engineering department" on the Research Centers page (screen 7) of the College of Engineering Profile, will not have their expenditures added to the school's total research expenditures. Energy, Environmental & Chemical Engineering

Research is coordinated through four academic clusters: 1. Aerosols: combustion, nano-particle technology, instrumentation, particle emission control, air quality, impact on climate change and environmental informatics. 2. Engineered Aquatic Processes: aquatic chemistry, water treatment, quantum and molecular-level modeling of interfaces, environmental restoration. 3. Metabolic Engineering and Systems Biology: cellular pathways for chemical transformation, biological routes to chemical/energy production. 4. Multiscale Engineering: nanoscale and mesoscale phenomena, catalysis and reaction engineering, electrochemical engineering. The clusters work together in topical research areas of energy and environment, advanced materials, and sustainable technologies for public health and international development. Research areas in clean energy include clean coal technology development; carbon dioxide sequestration; solar energy harvesting and utilization; energy storage; and green engineering including energy optimization and life cycle analysis. Other areas of research include nanoparticle technology focusing on synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials.

Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science

Research in MEMS is ongoing in several key areas reflecting the department’s focus on materials, biomechanics, aerospace, energy and sustainability. Materials engineering involves the synthesis and processing of electronic and photonic materials, magnetic materials, advanced composites, and high performance metals and alloys. Materials faculty are currently studying the effectiveness of nanophase reinforcement, microphase whiskers and ductile particles for improving the toughness, strength and creep resistance of polymeric and composite materials. Biomechanics faculty in MEMS study the mechanics of the heart, blood vessels, connective tissue and brain, as well as mechanical features of cells and artificial tissues. The department has an active research program in rotorcraft aeroelasticity. Energy faculty are studying interfacial transport phenomena, elctrochemical energy storage, and micro-nano devices for improved heat and mass exchangers. Underlying many of these applications is research on simulation, including nonlinear solid mechanics, computational fluid dynamics, optimization, stability, and control.
