Admissions Information

Graduate Admission to the College of Engineering

Applicants should address all communications to the chair of the appropriate department, who will provide the application form and relevant information about the program. Applications are also available in PDF format on the web and can be accessed by going to http://graduate.rice.edu. The completed form, transcript, recommendations, and Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores, if required, should be sent directly to the admitting department. The deadline for completed applications for the fall semester is February 1. Some departments, however, specify an earlier deadline, and departments may occasionally consider late applications. Candidates are evaluated on their previous academic records, available test scores, and letters of reference from scholars under whom they have studied.

Graduate Admission to an Engineering Department

Graduate study is open to well-qualified students who possess adequate background in the field of study they wish to pursue. Normally, but not always, the equivalent of an undergraduate major in the field is required, but the final judgment of preparation rests with the department concerned. The emphasis is on the quality of the applicant's preparation rather than on the academic program pursued or credits earned in achieving it.

Entrance Requirements for Foreign Students

Foreign students whose native language is not English must score a minimum of 600 on the paper-based TOEFL or 90 on the iBT (Internet-based) TOEFL. Alternatively, students may substitute their score on the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with a minimum score of 7.

Entrance Requirements for Non-Resident Students

There are no special requirements for non-resident students.

Residency Requirements

The residency requirement (period of full-time study at Rice) for the doctoral degree is four semesters. A semester course load of 9 hours or more constitutes full-time study in graduate programs. The residency requirement for master's degrees is one semester of full-time study.

Admissions Requirements for Transfer Students

There are no special admission requirements for transfer students into the graduate degree programs. Transfer students must meet the same academic requirements as all graduate students, including the required minimum number of semesters in residency at Rice, to earn Rice graduate degrees.
