Degree Requirements

Bachelor's Degree Requirements

Students completing a B.A. degree must pass a minimum of 120 to 132 semester hours, depending on the engineering major.
B.S. degree programs accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (www.abet.org) are offered in bioengineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering. To fulfill the requirements for B.S. degrees, students must pass 128 to 134 semester hours, depending on the major. All students must complete their degree requirements with a minimum GPA of 1.67 in all Rice courses and a minimum GPA of 2.00 (on a scale of 4.00) for those courses taken in fulfillment of their major requirements.

Master's Degree Requirements

The Master of Science (M.S.) degree is offered in all School of Engineering departments except Computational and Applied Mathematics and Statistics, which offers the Master of Arts (M.A.) degree. The M.S. and M.A. programs generally include original work embodied in a thesis, and the candidate's preparation is evidenced by a public oral examination. The thesis may be completed in absentia. All engineering departments offer professional (non-thesis) master's degrees. In addition, a professional master's degree in Computational Science & Engineering is offered by the Department of Computational & Applied Mathematics in conjunction with several departments in the School of Natural Sciences. Master's degree programs require completion of at least 30 semester hours or more of advanced courses, 24 of which must be done at Rice. To graduate, students must achieve at least a B- average (2.67 on a scale of 4.00) on courses counted towards the graduate degree. Some programs and some departments have more stringent standards.

Doctoral Degree Requirements

The degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) is awarded after successful completion of at least 90 semester hours of advanced study and an original investigation reported in an approved thesis. As final evidence of preparation for this degree, the candidate must pass a public oral examination. The residency requirement (period of full-time study at the University) for the doctorate is four semesters. The thesis may be completed in absentia. To graduate, students must achieve at least a B- average (2.67 on a 4.00 scale) for courses counted towards the graduate degree. Some programs and some departments have more stringent standards.
