Degree Requirements

Bachelor's Degree Requirements

The degree of Bachelor of Science in Engineering will be awarded to students in good academic standing who successfully satisfy the academic requirements of the University, the School of Engineering, and their specialization and who have adhered to the standards of conduct generally applicable to the engineering or related profession. A cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher is required for graduation. Students must also have at least a 2.0 average in the minimum requirements for a major, concentration, specialization, or minor. In key pre-requisite courses, a grade of "C" or better is required. Academic requirements consists of a minimum of 129 semester hours and includes general education courses, the engineering core curriculum, and both required and elective courses of study in an engineering specialization of the student's choice. No undergraduate student who has not completed the equivalent of two semesters (at least 32 hours of credit) in residence at Mercer will be awarded a Mercer degree.

Master's Degree Requirements

The degrees' Master of Science (M.S.) and Master of Science in Engineering (M.S.E.) will be awarded to students who complete the study of course prescribed by the department offering the program leading to the degree. Students must complete a minimum of 30 semester hours of coursework and a minimum of 18 hours in discipline, 12 of which must be at the 600 level. Students must also complete a minimum of 18 hours at the 600 level. An optional thesis or minor is also available. Students electing to complete a thesis must complete a minimum of 24 hours of course work and a minimum of 6 hours of research including a formal master's thesis. Prior to graduation, the student must have successfully completed the oral defense of the thesis. A maximum of 6 hours of research may be counted toward the degree. Additionally, students must have an overall grade point average of at least 3.0. The Master of Science in Engineering (M.S.E.) degree is integrated with the Bachelor of Science in Engineering (B.S.E.) degree to provide a five year dual-degree (B.S.E./M.S.E.) program. It is a 30 semester hour all coursework program beyond the 129 semester hours required for the B.S.E. degree. The dual-degree program is open only to graduating seniors at Mercer.
