Undergraduate Admission to the College of Engineering

Applying to UT Dallas as a Freshman
Applicants will be evaluated for admission and scholarship purposes as “first-time freshmen” if the students’ first enrollment at a college or university, excluding summer, will occur at UT Dallas within two years of graduating from high school. Applicants are still considered “first-time freshmen” if they earn college credit before high school graduation. Applicants completing coursework at a post-secondary institution after high school graduation should consult transfer admission requirements.
Texas Top 10%
In accordance with Chapter 51 of the Texas Education Code students are automatically admitted to the university as first-time freshmen if they graduate in the top 10% of their class from an accredited Texas high school and successfully complete the Recommended or Distinguished High School Program or earn a Distinguished Level of Achievement. Applicants must have graduated from high school during one of the two school years preceding the academic year for which they seek admission as first-time freshmen and have not attempted any higher education credits since graduation from high school. Applicants admitted because they are in the top 10% of their high school class may be required to complete additional preparatory work before enrolling in the university or complete developmental coursework to remove any deficiencies in their readiness to successfully complete college-level work prior to university graduation.
Assured Admission Criteria
Assured admission is granted to first-time freshmen who have successfully completed the full Texas recommended college-track high school curriculum, and achieved a composite ACT score of 26 or greater, or an SAT score of 1200 (combined math and critical reading) or greater. Assured admission course completion requirements include:
• English Language Arts (4 credits)
• Mathematics (4 credits, including Algebra II)
• Science (4 credits)
• Social Sciences (3 credits)
• Language (2 in a single language other than English)
• Fine Arts (1 credit in music, art, or drama)
Students from private schools and those outside the State of Texas will be considered for admission based on the same academic benchmarks listed above and a comparable high school curriculum.
Reviewed Admission Criteria
All applicants who do not meet the assured admission criteria will enter the reviewed admission process. Reviewed admission decisions are based on the applicant’s composite achievement profile, including:
• High School Rank and GPA.
• Strength of high school curriculum (e.g. Honors, AP, IB, etc.)
• SAT-I or ACT scores.
• Record of accomplishments, honors, awards, community service, work, etc.
• Essay: Topic C (recommended essay topic on application).
• Letters of Recommendation (suggested, but not required, and limited to a maximum of three).

Additional Requirements for International Applicants-
English proficiency is required for all international student applicants from non-native English-speaking countries. The English proficiency requirement can be waived for students from countries whose government language is English and whose education has been in English.

Undergraduate Admission to an Engineering Department

Once admitted to the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science, the student is automatically admitted to the department indicated on the application for admission. There is no separate entrance procedure or requirement for the department.

Entrance Requirements for Foreign Students

International Student Admissions (Students on Nonimmigrant Visas)
In addition to satisfying admissions criteria outlined in the catalog, international applicants from non-English-speaking countries must demonstrate English proficiency. English proficiency requirements can be met by:
Achieving a minimum score of 550 on the TOEFL IBT (paper-based test),
A minimum score of 80 on the TOEFL IBT (Internet-based test),
A minimum score of 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test,
A minimum score of 67 on the Pearson's Test of English Academic (PTE), or
A passing grade in level 112 of English from the ELS Language Centers.
Students must have taken the test within two years of the date of admission. Admitted international students must meet the requirements of the Texas Higher Education Assessment prior to enrolling in classes (see Texas Success Initiative).
International applicants are strongly urged to meet all published deadlines and submit the application and supporting materials at least six months ahead of the intended date of enrollment. Applicants providing foreign credentials/documents should send all materials to the following address:

Fees
Certified English translations are required for documents prepared in a language other than English. There is an additional foreign credential evaluation fee for any student who has been educated outside of the United States. These processing fees are required of all international students applying for admission to The University of Texas at Dallas.
Financial Responsibility

International students who plan to study with an F or J visa status must also provide evidence of financial support in order to obtain an I-20 or IAP-66 document.
Student Health Insurance and Documentation
International students are required to maintain approved comprehensive health insurance while enrolled at The University of Texas at Dallas. At registration, international students will be assessed a fee for the purchase of the UT System Student Health Insurance Plan. If there is evidence of continuing coverage under the UT System Employee Health Plan, a comparable mandatory employee plan, continuing mandatory coverage through a government sponsored health plan, or continuing coverage that satisfies the requirements of USIA regulations with regard to J1 and J2 visa holders, the student can request that the health insurance charge be waived. TB Screening Required for International Students
International students are required to have an Interferon Gamma Release Assay (IGRA) blood test (T-Spot) and a bacterial meningitis vaccination prior to registration. Screening for TB must be administered, regardless of prior BCG vaccination, no more than (6) months prior to the first day of class.
The only acceptable TB screening option is the Interferon Gamma Release Assay (IGRA) blood test (T-Spot). The mantoux tuberculin skin test is not acceptable.
The T-Spot test must be administered and interpreted in the United States by a licensed medical provider.
International students who do not complete a TB screening or who do not submit the appropriate documentation will NOT be allowed to register for classes.

Bacterial Meningitis Vaccine
Beginning January 1, 2012, state law requires that all entering Texas college students, who are under the age of 22, must receive a vaccination or booster (if the vaccination is five years old) against bacterial meningitis before enrollment.

Orientation and Registration
In addition to the requirements listed above, UT Dallas holds a mandatory orientation session for new F and J visa status international students. Students will not be allowed to register without a permit showing that they have attended orientation.

Entrance Requirements for Non-Resident Students

Same as in-state admission except for the automatic admission given to top 10% of graduating class rule for Texas high school graduates.

Residency Requirements

You are a United States Citizen, qualify as a permanent resident, have applied for permanent residency, or on an approved visa to establish domicile.
You have lived and been gainfully employed full time for the last twelve months in the State of Texas.
You have not been a full-time student during the last 12 months unless you have established residence PRIOR to enrolling in any institution of higher education in Texas.

Establishing Texas Residency
Under Texas state law, an applicant or enrolled student is classified either as a resident of Texas, a nonresident, or a foreign student. Residency for admission and tuition purposes at a public college or university in Texas is different from residency for voting or taxation purposes.
To qualify as a Texas resident, an individual must reside in Texas for 12 continuous months and establish a domicile in Texas the 12 months prior to census date. An applicant or student who is claimed as a dependent on a parent's most recent federal tax return will be classified based on the parent's qualifications for residency.
International students eligible to establish legal domicile in Texas may also qualify for Texas residency status; see the Residency FAQ for details.
If you are classified as a nonresident and feel you meet residency requirements, you may petition for reclassification by completing the Residency Core Questions prior to the first day of class for the current term.
Due to the changing nature of residency requirements, please review any updates or changes at the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Website.

One must be an independent (not claimed as a dependent for federal income tax purposes) U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident or international student who is eligible to establish a domicile in Texas and live in the state of Texas for 12 consecutive months and establish a domicile in Texas prior to enrollment. (If you are claimed as a dependent, your residency must be established by a parent or legal guardian.)

Admissions Requirements for Transfer Students

Transfer Student Admissions
Applicants to The University of Texas Dallas who have previously completed college level coursework at an accredited institution (excluding the summer following high school graduation) will be reviewed for admission as a transfer student. UT Dallas welcomes applications for the fall, spring, and summer from students who have begun their college work and are in good standing at other institutions of higher education.
Assured Admission Criteria

Applicants are eligible for assured transfer admission by meeting all of the following criteria:

42 or more transferable credit hours.
A minimum cumulative transferable GPA of 2.7 or greater on a 4.0 scale.
Fewer than 90 cumulative attempted hours between all attended institutions of higher education.
Applicant must be in good standing with the last college or university attended.

Or

A Comet Connection member with a completed AA/AS/AAT.
A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 or greater on a 4.0 scale.
Applicant must be in good standing with the last college or university attended.

Or

Qualify for admission under section 51.8035 of the Texas Education Code.
To take advantage of this option, the applicant must submit to UT Dallas information that “expressly and clearly” claims entitlement of admission under this section prior to the application deadline.

Reviewed Admission

All transfer applicants who do not meet the assured transfer admission criteria will enter the reviewed admission process. Applicants are required to submit all post-secondary academic course work and must be in good standing at the last college or university attended. Applicants may be required to submit the following additional documents:

Official high school transcript.
SAT/ACT scores.
Essay explaining educational history.
