Degree Requirements

Bachelor's Degree Requirements

To qualify for the Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) or the Bachelor of Software Engineering (BSE) degrees a student must successfully complete eight four-month academic terms and five four-month co-op work terms. Normally this must be completed with no more than two failed academic terms. Although students may request a leave of absence for one year at a time, this is not common.

The eight academic terms must be taken in sequence and are interspersed with the co-op work terms.

Each academic term consists of a combination of core courses, technical electives (most common in the last two academic terms) and complementary electives. A term is successfully completed when:
a) all courses have a minimum grade of 50% and
b) the term average is not less than 60%.

If the average is more than 60%, but one or two courses are less than 50%, the student may be permitted to proceed. However, all courses required for the degree must be passed or replaced prior to graduation. In addition, a student may not progress to the next term if they have three (or more) uncleared failed courses on their record.

Included in the required courses are three work term report courses that also must be passed during specific terms.

In addition to the academic term requirements, there is also a work term requirement for the degree. Each student must achieve a credit in 5 co-op courses, as well as 5 professional development courses taken during a work term.

The degree is complete when: all 8 academic terms have been passed; all required courses, including the work term report courses, as well as the professional development courses have been passed; and 5 work term credits have been recorded.
