Admissions Information

Graduate Admission to the College of Engineering

The minimum requirements for admission are specific for each department program. Generally students are admitted with full standing if they hold undergraduate degrees substantially equivalent to those of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, provided the applicant's preparation is appropriate to advanced study in his or her chosen major field. Prospective students should contact the specific department of interest for admission requirements.

Graduate Admission to an Engineering Department

A 3.0 (A=4.0) grade-point average for the last 60 hours of the undergraduate program and for any previous graduate work is a minimum requirement for admission. Requirements for admission to some department programs may be substantially higher. The Graduate Record Examination is required by most department programs.

Entrance Requirements for Foreign Students

Evidence of proficiency in English is required. The university requires a the following scores: 103 or higher on the TOEFL iBT or greater than a 6.5 on the IELTS.

Residency Requirements

Students in an MS program must complete at least 20 hours at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a PhD must complete 64 hours.

Admissions Requirements for Transfer Students

Students may request transfer of credit for former work completed elsewhere after successfully completing at least 8 hours of graduate work on the Urbana-Champaign campus. Transfer of credit is limited to 12 semester hours and cannot have been applied to another degree.
