Undergraduate Admission to the College of Engineering

Freshmen students who meet the University's requirements for unconditional admission as a degree seeking students and wish to major in engineering, are admitted as Pre-Engineering students. In addition to satisfying the general requirements for admission to UAB listed in the Undergraduate Catalog, incoming students must be eligible to enroll in Pre-Calculus Algebra (MA 105) or higher in the pre-calculus series to be admitted to the School of Engineering. Success at UAB begins with a strong high school academic curriculum which includes: 4 units of English (composition and literature), 3 units of Mathematics (algebra, geometry, trig. & calculus), 3 units of Science (chemistry, physics, biology including two with laboratory components), 3 units of Social Science (history, psychology, sociology, etc.), and 1 unit of foreign language for a total of at least 17 core courses. In addition, students must have a minimum grade point average (GPA) (grades 9-12) of 2.25 on a 4.0 scale and a minimum ACT score of 20 or SAT score of 950. Admission requirements for Biomedical Engineering undergraduates are ACT (Score: Minimum 28 or comparable SAT score)and high school GPA of 3.2 or greater. Applicants who seek admission and have been out of school for a period of time are evaluated on an individual basis.

Undergraduate Admission to an Engineering Department

Upon successful completion of minimum requirements, students are admitted to a major engineering discipline of their choice.

Entrance Requirements for Foreign Students

Applicants must provide transcripts and records of final examinations for the final four years of secondary study (high school), as well as complete transcripts from each college or university attended, a document-by-document evaluation and translation of work completed at each institution, and a grade point computation. A TOEFL score of at least 500 on the written examination or a score of 173 on the computer-based version or a score of 80 on internet-based version or IELTS score of 5.5 overall bandwidth with no less than a 5.0 on any module is required. Immigration requirements include a letter verifying support from the student's financial sponsor, an original bank statement confirming a balance sufficient to cover the first year's tuition, fees, and living expenses, and a clearance form if transferring from another school within the US. All international students are required to register with the UAB Student Health Service and to carry a health and accident insurance policy approved by the UAB Student Health Service.

Residency Requirements

A "resident student" is one who, at the time of registration, is 19 years of age or older and is a resident of the state of Alabama for at least one year immediately preceding the date of registration or whose "supporting person(s)" is a resident of the state of Alabama for at least one year immediately preceding the date of registration. Certification of an address and an intent to remain in the state indefinitely are prerequisities to establishing status.

Admissions Requirements for Transfer Students

All transfer students are admitted to pre-engineering and must meet general admission requirements including eligibility for MA 105-Precalculus Algebra or higher math placement and have a GPA on all college-level work of at least a 2.2. Upon successful completion of minimum requirements, students are admitted to a major engineering discipline of their choice.
