Degree Requirements

Bachelor's Degree Requirements

B. S. programs in engineering require 128 semester credit hours. A student must have at least a 2.00 GPA in all hours attempted at UAB and a 2.00 GPA in all natural sciences, mathematics and engineering courses.

Master's Degree Requirements

While each department may vary, standard requirements are 24 semester credit hours and at least 9 semester hours of thesis research and successful defense of a thesis (Plan I). Students may choose Plan II which requires 24 semester credit hours plus 9 semester hours of graduate coursework approved by the graduate study committee and successful defense of a written project report.

In an effort to meet increasing industry demands for highly skilled workers, the School of Engineering offers a variety of professional programs. These programs are designed to benefit working professionals who seek to increase their qualifications through specialized degree and certificate programs. The following tracks are available in the MEng: Advanced Safety Engineering and Management (ASEM), Construction Engineering Management (CEM), and Information Engineering and Management (IEM). Each of these requires 30 hours

Doctoral Degree Requirements

The Biomedical Engineering (BME) degree offered by the School of Engineering consist of a minimum of 24 semester hours beyond the master's degree; a written and oral comprehensive exam required for candidacy; and defense of a research dissertation. The Interdisciplinary Engineering PhD degree fosters interactions between the School of Engineering and medical and biomedical units; the Schools of Business, Natural Science and Mathematics, and Public Health. Students in Interdisciplinary Engineering will have the opportunity to develop a plan of study and research topic which incorporates course work and faculty expertise from two or more of these disciplines.

Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering offers a joint PhD in Civil Engineering with the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). The PhD in Computer Engineering is a shared program with UAH. The PhD in Materials Engineering is a joint program with the University of Alabama while the PhD in Materials Science is a joint interdisciplinary program with the University of Alabama and UAH. Coursework may be taken at UAB and/or the cooperating institution.
