College Description

Engineering College Description and Special Characteristics

The College of Engineering offers a four-year comprehensive undergraduate program that emphasizes a core of mathematics, science, and fundamental engineering in the first 1.5 years, followed by 2.5 years of specialization and hands-on experience in one of thirteen majors. A wide variety of minors that supplement the regular bachelor's degree are offered. The college of engineering is ranked among the top engineering schools in the country and is also closely integrated with Cornell's other Ivy League programs, including the Cornell Tech campus based in New York City. The college also offers a cooperative education program that allows for the student to spend seven to eight months in industry while still completing the undergraduate degree in four years. Graduate programs are organized into "fields," which include faculty members from more than one academic department. This structure is conducive to interdisciplinary research. The college also offers a one-year, project-oriented professional Master of Engineering (MEng) degree. An emphasis on entrepreneurialism yields a wide range of courses, fellowships, experiential learning and product development opportunities for students to enhance their leadership skills or bring a technology to market.
