Degree Requirements

Bachelor's Degree Requirements

All candidates for the Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree must satisfy the requirements for a particular major, the Diversified Education Curriculum, and other university degree requirements. The B.E. programs require a minimum of 128 credits, a 2.0 GPA overall at Stony Brook, and grades of 2.00 or better in certain courses in engineering and related fields.

All candidates for the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree must satisfy the requirements for a particular major, the Diversified Education Curriculum, and other university degree requirements. The B.S. programs require a minimum of 120 credits, a 2.0 GPA overall at Stony Brook, and grades of 2.00 or better in certain courses in engineering and related fields.

Master's Degree Requirements

All departments offer thesis and non-thesis options, except Technology and Society and Applied Math & statistics, which offer only a non-thesis program. Thirty credits of graduate coursework are required in each department with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0/4.0. Six to nine credits may be satisfied with a thesis, depending upon the department. Electives for consideration must be approved by the advisor, graduate studies director or graduate program committee.

Doctoral Degree Requirements

Written qualifying and oral preliminary examinations are required for entrance and candidacy advancement, respectively, within a specified time frame. All requirements must be completed 7 years after completion of 24 credits in the program. At least two consecutive semesters of full-time study are required by each department. The most important requirement is the completion of a dissertation, which must be an original scholarly investigation.
