Research Description By Graduate Engineering Department

Biosystems & Agricultural Engineering

The primary research focus of the department is to develop engineering principles and tools that can be used to design systems to enhance and control biological and environmental processes. This includes research on biomechanical systems; food and bioprocessing systems; and environment and natural resource systems.

Chemical Engineering

We are developing the knowledge base, engineering tools, and people to advance technology in the areas of thermodynamics, ultra-pure water, biomedical and biochemical applications, process design, automation and autonomous systems, optimization, and free-form fabrication.

Civil and Environmental Engineering

The department emphasizes applied research related to the infrastructure, the oil and gas industries, and other industrial and consulting partners. Basic research is conducted in the geotechnical, environmental and construction materials engineering areas.

Computer Science

Research areas include Anonymity and Privacy, Artificial Intelligence, Bioinformatics, Computer Architecture and Systems, Computer and Sensor Networks, Cryptography and Security, Digital Entertainment, Graphics, Vision and Image Processing, Health Informatics, Mobile Computing, Operating Systems, Parallel and Distributed Computing, Quantum Computing, Reliability Theory and Risk Analysis, Robotics, Scientific Computing, Software Engineering, Social Networks, Theory of Computation, and Wireless Networks

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Conducts research in a wide spectrum of areas including computer systems, embedded controllers, CPU architectures, digital devices, electromagnetic fields, electromagnetic compatibility, THz propagation, metamaterials, plasmonics, optics, lasers, energy, power generation, power distribution, smart grids, energy management, electronic sensors, mixed-signal electronics, control systems, robotics, digital signal processing, machine vision, biomedical applications, communication systems, information theory, wireless networks, network security, neural networks, radar systems, and signal detection.

Industrial Engineering and Management

Industrial Engineering and Management’s research includes: large scale systems modeling, simulation, and optimization, supply chain modeling and optimization, revenue management, RFID systems, energy management and conservation, bio-fuels, health care systems and process improvement, sensor-based modeling, automated quality control, and precision manufacturing

Material Sciences and Engineering

The department is engaged in research and graduate education on advanced materials such as diamond for thermal management of electronics, supercapacitors for energy storage, materials for lithium ion battery, self repairing glasses for fuel cells, ceramic composites for jet engines, nanomaterials for drug delivery and treatment of diseases, polymer composites for storage of natural gas, recovery of precious metals as catalyst from automobiles, in situ studies on materials using x-ray photon sources to high temperatures, manufacturing by printing technology, optical materials for displays in cell phones and TV, sensors for detecting harmful gases. The department also has facilities for processing and testing of materials for mechanical, electrical, optical, dielectric, and thermal properties and associated modeling to predict performance.

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Research includes unmanned aerial systems, aeroservoelasticity, aerodynamics, manufacturing processes, materials engineering, precision machining and surface mechanics, web handling, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, thermal and environmental systems, applied automation and machine vision, material characterization, dynamics and controls, viscoelastic mechanics, biomedical fluid mechanics and cardiovascular tissue engineering, non-destructive evaluation, and laser assisted manufacturing and materials processing.

Center for Local Government & Technology

The Center for Local Government Technology is a public service outreach program of the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology at Oklahoma State University. CLGT is committed to providing the highest quality educational programs, training, technical assistance, and customized services to various customer groups who specialize in serving the public: County officers and employees; Tribal governments and agencies; Municipal officers and employees; Rural transit agencies; State agencies; Professional associations.

Cooper Engineering Lab

The 33,000-square-foot facility has the capacity to test full-size bridges and multi-story buildings thanks to thick strong floor and large cranes and advanced testing equipment. It recreates the real-world environment to evaluate new concepts in science and engineering as well as showcases technology developed at OSU. A large testing bay is also dedicated to researching how structures and materials respond to fire and hazardous events

Helmerich Research Center

The mission of Helmerich Research Center is focused on providing research, testing, technology transfer and education to advance the region's aerospace, energy, manufacturing, transportation, electronics and medical industries. Research at the HRC has a positive impact on the economy and quality of life for the region and provides opportunities for OSU students and faculty to work hand-in-hand with industries.

Industrial Assessment Center

The OSU Industrial Assessment Center (IAC) is funded by the US Department of Energy (DOE) through the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy via the Advanced Manufacturing Office.
Since 1976, the Industrial Assessment Centers have helped American manufacturers save energy, reduce costs, and increase productivity during an era of energy supply volatility and rising prices.

NASA Space Grant

Space Grant is a national network of colleges and universities working to expand opportunities for Americans to understand and participate in NASA's aeronautics and space projects by supporting and enhancing science and engineering education, research and public outreach efforts. The network includes over 850 affiliates from universities, colleges, industry, museums, science centers, and state and local agencies. These affiliates belong to one of 52 consortia in all 50 states. In Oklahoma, there are a total of 16 affiliates.

New Product Development Center

The mission of the Oklahoma State University New Product Development Center is to link the innovative ideas and capabilities of Oklahoma’s small- and medium-sized manufacturers with the knowledge and technical expertise of the land grant university faculty, staff and students. This collaboration allows for the development and commercialization of economically competitive new products and improved manufacturing practices that strengthen economies, create new and enhanced jobs, capital investment and an increased tax base.

Oklahoma Transportation Center/Southern Plains Transportation Center

The Southern Plains Transportation Center (SPTC) is a multi-disciplinary coalition of the University of Oklahoma (OU), Oklahoma State University (OSU), and several other universities in Region 6. SPTC is funded by US DOT through MAP-21 as the Region 6 University Transportation Center (UTC). It serves as a resource for solving critical transportation problems in the State and our nation in a cooperative manner for State-of-Good-Repair. Other key funding agencies of SPTC include the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT), Oklahoma Turnpike Authority (OTA), private companies and associations representing all transportation modes.

Unmanned Systems Research Institute

The Unmanned Aircraft Flight Station is a dedicated UAS flight development and test facility 12 miles East of Stillwater that includes 2 runways (600 and 400 feet), an aircraft hangar and a state-of-the-art control room with monitoring capabilities. The UAFS includes a 1 mile by 1 mile flight area of unpopulated land to use for research, education and outreach in UAS.

Web Handling Center

The Web Handling Research Center (WHRC) at Oklahoma State University is an Industry / University Cooperative Research Center. It was originally established in 1986 as a National Science Foundation Center (I/UCRC). The WHRC is the only center of its type in the world.
