Admissions Information

Graduate Admission to the College of Engineering

To be admitted to the graduate programs in the College of Engineering, applicants must have a Bachelor of Science in Engineering or one of the physical, mathematical, or biological sciences. Applicants should have a 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) or better, but exceptions are made for those who demonstrate ability for graduate study. Applications should be completed by January 15 for full consideration for the fall semester. Admissions are made on an individual basis and take into account the applicant's previous record, the intended area of study, and the specific needs and capacity of the department. Applicants wishing to enter the Part Time Practice Oriented Master of Science in Engineering program or the Practice Oriented Master of Science in Engineering with a Concentration in Energy Engineering must have a bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or in a closely related field (e.g., one of the mathematical, physical or biological sciences).

Entrance Requirements for Foreign Students

All graduate applicants whose first language is not English must submit a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (for paper test) or 213 (for computer test) or 80 (for internet based test) to begin a graduate program of study. Applicants are required to provide supporting documentation to verify adequate funding to pursue studies at UT. International students must also submit scores from the GRE general test.

Entrance Requirements for Non-Resident Students

Same as resident students.

Residency Requirements

All students must be enrolled in the semester of graduation. Two consecutive semesters of full-time work must be completed at the University in order to fulfill requirements for the Ph.D. degree.
