Undergraduate Admission to the College of Engineering

Recommended units (academic years of study) for students desiring to enter an engineering related major mirror the requirements at the applicants individual secondary school. Particular emphasis is place on Mathematics courses, and coursework through Pre-Calculus is highly recommended during an applicant's secondary school career. Applicants to the School of Engineering are required to provide SAT or ACT exam results (they can not apply as Score Optional applicants), and it is required that a score of 550 on the Mathematics section of the SAT, or a 24 on the Mathematics sub-section of the ACT, be attained for entry into an engineering or computer science program.

Undergraduate Admission to an Engineering Department

There are no separate admissions criteria for individual engineering departments.

Entrance Requirements for Foreign Students

Application for admission to the university by international students holding or seeking F1 or J1 visas should be made directly to the Admissions Office before January 15 for the subsequent academic year. The deadline is enforced to ensure adequate time to process applications. Applications from international students are reviewed with all other applications. If applicants have not completed a year of work at a college or university in the U.S., they are required to submit a satisfactory score on the SAT or ACT consistent with the requirements for domestic students. Applicants whose native language is not English are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam, or another approved English language examination, or achieve a minimum score of 450 on the Critical Reading section of an SAT taken before March 2016, or a 500 on the Critical Reading section of an SAT taken after March 2016, to demonstrate English Language proficiency. Sufficient scores on the SAT or ACT exam Mathematics section are still required. A minimum score of 80 on the Internet-based TOEFL or 6.5 on the IELTS is required for an applicant to be considered for admission. Along with their application for admission, a student must present official documents for all previous study. Applicants seeking an F1 or J1 visa must complete a GMU financial statement accompanied by a current bank statement verifying that funds are available for the first and subsequent years. Students on F1 or J1 visas must maintain full-time status each semester. All new students must submit an Immunization Requirements Card. Health insurance is mandatory for students on F1 or J1 visas. English language proficiency is determined at the sole discretion of the Office of Admissions, and international applications should familiarize themselves with the requirements.

Entrance Requirements for Non-Resident Students

Applicants with permanent residence in the United States and nonimmigrant visa holders must meet freshman or transfer admission requirements. All applicants must complete a domicile and residency form.

Residency Requirements

At least 30 credits toward the degree must be completed at George Mason University.

Admissions Requirements for Transfer Students

A transfer applicant who has completed at least 30 credit hours of transferable credit must submit official transcripts from each institution attended. Applicants with fewer than 30 credit hours must also submit a copy of their secondary school record in addition to coursework from all post-secondary institutions.
