Degree Requirements

Bachelor's Degree Requirements

The following general requirements for a bachelor of science degree must be completed by all undergraduate students who receive bachelor's degrees through majors in the Volgenau School of Engineering: 1) Completion of at least 120 credits of academic work including 45 credits of upper-level courses. 2) Completion of at least 6 credits of English composition, 3 credits of literature, and 3 credits of oral communication. 3) Completion of 3 credits of arts, 3 credits of Western civilization or world history, 3 credits of social and behavioral science, and 3 credits of global understanding. 4) Completion of at least 24 credits of social science and humanities course work, which is normally satisfied by the 24 credits listed in the previous two requirements. 5) Completion of the requirements for the major as listed in the curriculum for each program, including courses which meet university requirements in quantitative reasoning, natural science, information technology including ethics, and synthesis or capstone experience.

Master's Degree Requirements

The following requirements apply to all master's degrees. 1) A candidate must have earned a minimum of 30 semester hours of graduate credit. 2) Only graduate-level courses may apply toward the degree. 3) A graduate student may apply up to 6 hours of C grades in graduate-level courses and must have a grade point average of at least 3.0 on the degree application. 4) A candidate must have completed at least 18 semester hours of graduate-level work at the university after having been admitted to degree status. All requirements for the degree must be completed within 6 years from the date of initial registration as an admitted graduate student. All of our Master's degree programs require 30 hours, and some of them have thesis or project options. In addition, there are a number of certificate programs that provide the opportunity to study a specific area of focus.

Doctoral Degree Requirements

Students enrolled in doctoral programs at the Volgenau School must complete a plan of study that outlines the core curriculum and in-depth study and research to be undertaken. The plan of study generally includes 18-24 hours of coursework beyond a related Master's degree, Qualifying Exams and 24 additional dissertation hours. After passing an oral comprehensive examination, the student prepares a written dissertation proposal, which is presented in an oral public presentation to the doctoral supervisory committee. After successfully completing this requirement, the student is formally admitted as a "candidate" for the Ph.D. degree. The student must prepare, with supervision from the dissertation director and committee, a final publishable dissertation. The student must then successfully defend the dissertation.
