Degree Requirements

Bachelor's Degree Requirements

Students must meet general University requirements including: English composition and American history and institutions requirements; a minimum of 184-191 quarter units (depending upon major); academic residence requirements; grade point average of at least 2.0 (C) overall, in major courses, and in upper-division major courses; and the major requirements and the general education requirements for the College of Engineering.

Master's Degree Requirements

Credit hours for Plan 1 (MS degree with thesis) are 42 for CS, ECE, ME and MATRL; 30 for ChE. Thesis may not be completed in absentia except for CS and ECE. Oral defense of thesis is required, except MATRL and ME. Plan 2 (MS degree with courses only) requires 42 credit hours and has mandatory comprehensive exam (ME and MATRL has special project instead of comp. exam); MATRL offers Plan 2. Residency requirement is 33 credit hours and a minimum of 3 quarters. Minimum GPA is 3.0. No foreign language required.

TECHNOLOGY MGMT: 36 units for coursework; 6 credit hours for field project and practica.

Doctoral Degree Requirements

There are no specific graduate course requirements, however some programs have core courses which are required. Minimum grade point average is 3.25 for ChE, 3.5 for CS, ME and MATRL and 3.0 for ECE. Advancement to candidacy is required, and there is a six quarter residency requirement. Oral defense of dissertation is required. Dissertation may be completed in absentia for CS, ECE, and MATRL. No foreign language is required.
