Admissions Information

Graduate Admission to the College of Engineering

Official transcripts and completion certificates (photocopies are not acceptable).

Some programs require letters of recommendation.

Specifically for Master's Programs:

A minimum of 2.75-3.00 undergraduate grade point average depending on the program.

The GRE General section is required if one or more of the following conditions is true:
- The undergraduate degree was awarded by a college or university outside of the United States or Canada (and Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom for admission in Chemical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering), or by a Canadian institution not accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board of the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers.
- An unaccredited college or university awarded the undergraduate degree.
- The student’s undergraduate cumulative grade-point average is below a minimum required by the program.
- The year of the baccalaureate degree precedes the date of application to the College of Graduate Studies by more than six years; however, in this case, the examination requirement may be waived, with program approval, if the applicant’s undergraduate grade-point average is below the minimum required by the program.

The minimum scores required for the Quantitative section and for the Analytical Writing section vary depending on the specific program.

Specifically for Doctoral Programs:

The applicant should hold a bachelor's or master's degree with at least one degree in engineering. In exceptional cases, applicants may be considered without an engineering degree if they have a strong foundation in math and science. Minimum grade-point averages of 3.00 at the bachelor's and 3.25 at the master's level are required.

The GRE General section is required of all applicants. Minimum scores at the 80th percentile on the Quantitative section and 3.5 on the Analytical Writing section are usually required depending on the specialization area.

Two letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with the student's previous academic work are required. Applicants are required to submit a two-page personal statement of their research interests.

If an English language proficiency examination is required, then a TOEFL score of at least 550 on the paper-based exam, 78 on the internet exam (including at least 20 in reading, 21 in listening, 17 in writing, and 20 in speaking), 6.0 on the IELTS exam, 5.0 on the iTEP exam, or 213 on the computer-based exam, is required. Students who do not satisfy these requirements but who do satisfy the University's TOEFL requirements, will be tested upon arrival at CSU by the English as a Second Language Program. Depending on test results, students may be required to take a writing (ESL 502) and/or speaking (ESL 503) course.

Please check with each Engineering program for specific admission requirements.

Graduate Admission to an Engineering Department
