Engineering College Description and Special Characteristics

The Baskin School of Engineering at UC Santa Cruz offers unique opportunities for education, research and training. With a combination of expertise, innovation and a sense of adventure, faculty and students at the Baskin School of Engineering seek new approaches to some of the most critical challenges of the 21st century, thriving within the domains of data science, genomics, bioinformatics, biotechnology, statistical modeling, high performance computing, sustainability engineering, human-centered design, communications, optoelectronics and photonics, networking and technology management. By leveraging the novel tools that often emerge from changing technologies, we have pioneered new engineering approaches and disciplines, examples of which include biomolecular engineering, computational media, and technology and information management.

The Baskin School of Engineering is dedicated to providing first-rate education that instills strong basic knowledge for sound practice in science and engineering for the well-being of society. Our courses of study nurture creative thinking and prepare students for productive and rewarding careers. Our students are involved in many aspects of campus life: study abroad, the entrepreneurship program, the honors program, extracurricular activities, participation in faculty research, and internships in high-tech companies in the Silicon Valley region and elsewhere. Our Corporate Sponsored Senior Projects Program provides real-world engagement for undergraduates working with industry leaders on projects that matter.

UCSC is located 45 minutes away from Silicon Valley, one of the world's largest centers of innovation and technology. The School's relationships with researchers at companies such as Amazon Lab126, Cisco, Corning, eBay, Google, Hewlett-Packard, Hitachi, IBM, Oracle, Plantronics, Samsung, Seagate Technology, and Xilinx allow students to gain valuable experience via internships, research activities and guest lectures.
