Engineering College Description and Special Characteristics

Founded in 1795, Union College is a small, independent liberal arts college committed to integrating engineering with humanities and the physical and social sciences in novel and exciting ways. A distinctive feature at Union is the existence within the liberal arts framework of strong engineering programs. Union offers ABET-accredited engineering degrees in bioengineering, computer, electrical and mechanical engineering. There are approximately 2,200 full-time undergraduates on campus, with slightly more than 16% majoring in engineering in 2016. Most engineering students complete an introductory engineering course with a strong design component, and all must complete a senior capstone design course. Many courses include significant hands-on laboratory or design studio components. Students conduct research in laboratories of faculty dedicated to teaching and research that complement department laboratories with state-of-the-art instrumentation. Computer labs and a world-class computing center are available to all students, as are assisted learning, help and writing centers.
