Degree Requirements

Bachelor's Degree Requirements

The Uniform Undergraduate Degree Requirements apply to all Texas Tech University undergraduates regardless of their major or college. The requirements have six components: general requirements, core curriculum requirement, multicultural requirement, foreign language requirement, science laboratory requirement, and writing intensive requirement. The minimum number of hours for graduation for engineering degrees and the computer science degree ranges from 120 to 130.

Master's Degree Requirements

There are two basic plans for master's degree work: (1) A minimum of 24 hours of graduate coursework plus 6 hours of thesis; (2) A minimum of 30 hours of graduate coursework. Some degrees have a greater minimum hour requirement. The minimum requirement for graduation is an average of 3.0 in the major subject and an overall average of 3.0 on all courses within their program, comprising the official program for the degree. Individual departments may have higher standards. The degree requirements are set forth in the “Texas Tech University Undergraduate and Graduate Catalog.”

Doctoral Degree Requirements

A minimum of three years of graduate study beyond the bachelor's degree is required for the doctorate. Work completed for the master's degree, other than thesis hours, may be considered as a part of this period if it forms a logical sequence in the entire program. The minimum requirement for graduation is a grade point average of 3.0 in the major subject, exclusive of credits for the doctoral dissertation, and a grade point average of 3.0 in all other courses in their program taken for graduate credit outside the major. The degree requirements are set forth in the “Texas Tech University Undergraduate and Graduate Catalog.”
