Admissions Information

Graduate Admission to the College of Engineering

Meeting the requirement for Proficiency in English Language and:

for Master's Programs: minimum GPA of 3.0 on a four-point scale and holders of BSc or equivalent degree from Science, Medicine, Kinesiology or other Engineering, if accepted, may be required to take additional senior undergraduate engineering courses. Holders of Bachelor's degrees from other disciplines are required to complete a minimum of 10 make-up undergraduate engineering half-courses with a minimum GPA of 3.0 before admission.

for Doctor of Philosophy: Minimum GPA 3.50 on a four-point scale or equivalent. Holders of MSc degree from Science, Medicine, Kinesioloy or Engineering. If accepted, may be required to take additional senior undergraduate Engineering courses. Transfer from MSc to PhD program is allowed only after the successful completion of all courses required for the MSc degree.

Graduate Admission to an Engineering Department

Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering: Acceptable Bachelor's degree with a minimum admission grade point average of 3.0 on a four-point scale (for Master's program) or acceptable Master's degree with a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a four-point scale (for PhD program) in Chemical, Petroleum, Environmental and Biomedical Engineering. Students holding a degree in another branch of Engineering or in Science may also be considered for admission. Applicants to a Master's program who hold a Bachelor's degree with Distinction may be considered for later transfer to the doctoral program.

A non-refundable application fee of $100 for Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents, $130 for international students with a study permit is required. Official transcripts from all post secondary institutions, two appropriate letters of reference dated within the last 12 months and an official TOEFL, IELTS score (if applicable) are required.

Deadline for submission of complete applications for students with international transcripts: 15 March for September admission, 15 July for January admission, 15 November for May admission. Deadline for submission of complete application for students with Canadian and US transcripts: 15 July for September admission, 15 November for January admission, 15 March for May admission.

Department of Civil Engineering: for Master's program and PhD program, same as the Graduate Admission requirements to the School of Engineering. For Project Management Specialization: minimum 5 years industrial experience, except in special circumstances.

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: For Master's, a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or computer engineering. For MSc with specialization in Software Engineering, at least 1 year of experience in software development; background knowledge in C or C++; knowledge of object-oriented design and human-computer interaction. For PhD, a Master's degree in electrical, computer or software engineering.

Department of Geomatics: same as the Graduate Admission requirements to the School of Engineering.

Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering: for Master's programs, same as the Graduate Admission requirements to the School of Engineering. For PhD program, MSc degree GPA of 3.6 or higher. Transfer from MSc to PhD program is allowed only after the successful completion of all courses required for the MSc degree with a GPA of 3.50 or higher.

Residency Requirements

The total of advanced credit and transfer credit may not exceed either one-third of the program or two full-course equivalents, whichever is less.

Admissions Requirements for Transfer Students

Doctoral students who have transferred from another institution must pass a candidacy examination at the University of Calgary. An exception may be made if a candidacy examination equivalent to that at the University of Calgary has been successfully completed at another university.
