Entrance and admission requirements are different for each of the 14 colleges that comprise the University of Cincinnati. Refer to the web page, www.admissions.uc.edu, for each specific college admission requirement.

Recommendations

Students should apply in the autumn (August-November) in the year prior to desired admission in order to ensure admission to popular programs and to have maximum opportunity for scholarship awards. Following the December 1st early action deadline, applications will continue to be accepted on a rolling basis for programs that still have capacity until March 1st. However, popular programs are closed well before this date.

Degree Requirements

Bachelor's Degree Requirements

The degree requirements vary by program. The engineering programs require between 120.67 and 133.0 semester credit hours to graduate for the class of 2016. All students must enroll in the professional practice program. Senior year students are recommended for degrees when they have completed all requirements of their chosen curricula with a university cumulative average of 2.00 or better, have attained averages of 2.00 or better for all course work in their major, and have fulfilled the professional practice requirements.

Master's Degree Requirements

Master's with Thesis - GPA requirement: 3.00/4.00 scale. On the semester system, a total of 30 credit hours is required, through a combination of formal class hours and research. A minimum of 21 credit hours of formal class work is required. Minimum one academic year of full-time graduate study for the MS degree. Thesis may be written in absentia only if approved by advisor and department. Programs may be full- or part-time. Must complete all requirements for degree no later than 5 years from the date of entering an MS degree program. 34 Credit Hours required for degree. Minimum one academic year of full-time graduate study or equivalent work in one department. Nonthesis option available in some departments, requires a minimum of 34 graduate semester credits; a research project may be required.

Doctoral Degree Requirements

GPA requirement: The GPA requirement is established by each department, generally 3.40/4.00 scale. A total of 90 credit hours is required for a degree, through a combination of class hours and research. Students entering with an MS degree need a minimum of 18 class hours plus research. PhD students required to pass an examination for candidacy.

Student Design Projects Description

The Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering has established a Design Clinic for senior capstone design students in the mechanical engineering program. The design problems are submitted by industry and are real design problems for these industries. Students work in teams to achieve practical design solutions for these problems. There is a company mentor and a faculty mentor for each team.

College Description

Engineering College Description and Special Characteristics

The University traces its origin to 1819, when Cincinnati College was founded. The appointment of a professor of civil engineering in 1874 and the organization of a department of engineering, culminated in the establishment of the College of Engineering in 1900. UC’s College of Engineering is heralded as the founding institution of cooperative education (co-op). In 1906, under the direction of then Dean Herman Schneider, the college began requiring its students to work and attend classes in alternating periods. This combination proved so successful in preparing graduates for their later careers that more than 1,000 schools offer forms of the program today.The co-op educational program helps students to practice engineering as undergraduates. Students also earn $6,000 to $9,500 per co-op work assignment. Many students graduate debt-free and with valuable engineering experience.

In 2009, the College of Engineering and the College of Applied Science united to form the the College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS). This restructuring strengthens the focus on engineering and engineering technology and the enhancement of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) related programs. Each entity brings a rich history with exceptional and often complementary strengths.

Admissions/Transfers

Undergraduate Admission to the College of Engineering

High school credits required (in terms of high school units) English 4, Math 4 (including at least pre-calculus or calculus), Science 3 (including at least physics and chemistry) Social Studies 3, Electives 5 (elective units must include one or any combination of foreign language, fine arts, business, career technical education, family and consumer sciences, technology, agricultural education, or additional core course not otherwise required).

Undergraduate Admission to an Engineering Department

Admission is based on high school curriculum, class rank, grade point average and SAT/ACT scores. Essay, personal statement, extra-curricular activities, and letter(s) of recommendation can be a factor in the admissions decision. The average student offered admission to engineering has a 29 ACT, 1280 SAT (critical reading and math sections only) and 3.7/4.0 GPA.

Residency Requirements

Transfer students must become full-time students in the College of Engineering and Applied Science. Students must complete at least three years in the college including a minimum of three semesters of cooperative education.

Admissions Requirements for Transfer Students

Transfer students must have completed most of the freshman year work in courses such as calculus, chemistry and physics. Specifically, students should have completed a minimum of 4 semester based credit hours of calculus and 4 semester based credit hours of chemistry and/or calculus-based physics. GPA requirements vary by program, but at minimum, students must have a 2.75 GPA from a four-year institution or a 3.0 or better from a two-year institution. Many programs require a 3.0 GPA or above.

Admissions Information

Graduate Admission to the College of Engineering

Admission to graduate programs is granted by individual Departments to those who present evidence of potential ability for scholarship, advanced study, and research. In addition to considering applicants with an engineering degree in the department's own field, most departments will grant provisional admission to some qualified applicants with previous degrees in other engineering disciplines, or in physics, chemistry or mathematics. Some undergraduate course work is usually required in these cases. In general, a minimum of 3.0/4.0 GPA is required for admission. The minimum TOEFL score accepted, Internet based, is 92. The GRE is required for admission and also varies by department. There is no college minimum for the GRE.

Include all expenditures associated with grants and contracts specifically budgeted for externally sponsored research and associated programs and expenditures associated with all gifts auditably used for research. Include expended funds provided by the following external sources:

  1. Federal Government
  2. State Government
  3. Foreign Governments
  4. Industry
  5. Non-Profit Organizations (e.g. foundations)
  6. Individuals
  7. Local Government

The expenditures reported should be only those funds provided by organizations, agencies, and individuals external to the institution. Cost sharing/matching funds should be included only if provided from sources external to the institution.

Only State government funds that were obtained competitively or as matching funds associated with other externally funded programs should be included. State funds that are part of the normal operating budget should not be included regardless of purpose.

For all joint or contracted projects or sub-projects, only the portion of the center research performed by faculty, staff, and students of the affiliated engineering school should be credited to that school. Expenditures for capital costs of research laboratory building construction should not be included.

Expenditures for research laboratory renovations should not be included unless the renovation funds expended came from grants and contracts expressly intended for the direct support of engineering research.

Any portion of academic year and/or summer salary for any researcher that is not derived from external research grants or contracts should not be counted.

Expenditures: Report actual expenditures (as opposed to authorization amounts) in U.S. dollars.

Time frame for expenditures: Report expenditures for your current fiscal year.

Research centers listed as "WITHIN an engineering department" on the Research Centers page (screen 7) of the College of Engineering Profile, will not have their expenditures added to the school's total research expenditures. Such expenditures can be included in the department total, while still being listed for the appropriate center. This allows users to list the expenditures in two areas without double-counting.

Student Design Projects Description

A typical description of a senior design capstone in Applied Science begins with “an original effort by a student to investigate and solve a complex problem resulting in an independent design-and-build project of substantial technological sophistication. The completion of the baccalaureate thesis includes proof-of-design, working demonstration and scientific documentation culminating in presentation and defense.” Since 1974, programs have required senior projects as capstone experiences for most of the degree programs. Since the initiation UC’s General Education Capstone in 2001, all Applied Science baccalaureate programs require a formal capstone experience as part of a degree granting program in the college.

College Description and Special Characteristics: Applied Science seeks to serve a diverse student population through traditional, experiential, project based instruction and required cooperative experiences. Upon graduation, our students will possess the skills necessary to integrate and apply knowledge to solve problems, and to communicate those solutions in a professional context.

Admissions/Transfers

Admission to Engineering Technology College

High school credits required (in terms of high school units) English 4, Math 4, Science 3 (1 physics or 1 chemistry), Social Studies 3, Electives 5 (elective units must include one or any combination of foreign language, fine arts, business, career technical education, family and consumer sciences, technology, agricultural education, or additional core course not otherwise required)

Admission to an Engineering Technology Department

Admission is based on high school curriculum, class rank, grade point average and SAT/ACT scores. Essay, personal statement, extra-curricular activities, and letter(s) of recommendation can be a factor in the admissions decision. The average student offered admission to a technology program has a 25 ACT, 1130 SAT (critical reading and math sections only) and 3.6/4.0 GPA.

Residency Requirements

Transfer students must become full-time students in the College of Engineering and Applied Science. Students must complete at least three years in the college including a minimum of three semesters of cooperative education.

Admissions Requirements for Transfer Students

To be eligible for transfer, students must have completed one college level calculus course and one college level physics course. GPA requirements vary by program, typically ranging between 2.5 and 3.0/4.0.
