Admissions Information

Graduate Admission to the College of Engineering

Students seeking to become candidates for a Master of Science degree in Engineering must possess the equivalent of a Bachelor of Science degree currently specified by Cal State L.A. for engineering. In addition, applicants must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average in their undergraduate engineering program. Applicants who lack full preparation or the required grade point average, but who possess a minimum 2.5 grade point average in their BS programs may be considered for conditional admission by their major departments as special action on a case-by-case basis.

A total of 30 semester units is required for the Master of Science in Engineering. This requirement includes at least 15 units of graduate (5000-level) courses, as well as a thesis, culminating project, or comprehensive examination. Students must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in all courses within the Master program, in addition to the courses within the specified area of specialization. Degree programs are planned under the guidance of a faculty advisor.

Entrance Requirements for Foreign Students

In addition to the general graduate admission criteria, foreign students need to have a minimum score of acceptable English Language Proficiency Exam as listed below:
TOEFL: 80 ibt or 550 PBT
PTE: 53
IELTS: Band 6

Residency Requirements

At least 21 semester units for the master’s degree completed in residence at Cal State L.A.
