Research Description By Engineering Research Center

Arkansas Center for Space and Planetary Sciences

Conduct research on astronomy and planetary science, the geology and biology of the planets, and asteroid and comet surfaces. We design instruments and plan missions for the exploration of our solar system and other planetary systems. It houses the only university-based, large-scale planetary simulation chamber in the country along with major facilities for the analysis of extraterrestrial samples. Major research interests include the analysis of returned samples from space, the nature of Mars, and instrumentation for use in space.

Arkansas High Performance Computing Center

The Arkansas High Performance Computing Center is a campuswide provider of supercomputing resources for research by students and faculty. The Star of Arkansas became operational in June 2008 with partial funding from the National Science Foundation. At that time, Star ranked 339 on the list of the world’s 500 fastest supercomputers
with a sustained performance of 10.75 teraflops (trillions of floating point
operations per second). The Center supports a full breadth of research applications including computational condensed matter physics, computational chemistry, and nanoscale material behavior. The Center also provided educational experiences for
students seeking experience in a parallel computing environment.

Arkansas Security Research and Education Institute

Arkansas Security Research and Education Institute (ASCENT)
ASCENT’s mission is to:
• Identify and solve modern security challenges in the areas of cyber, transportation, critical infrastructure, and food/water;
• Establish and grow partnerships with industry professionals to ensure that the security research retains significant and practical impacts;
• Develop and support educational initiatives that continuously evolve with state-of-the-art security issues and technologies in all thrust areas;
• Serve as the Arkansas’ source for communication and awareness of security threats, solutions, and needs.
The role of the institute is to bring important practical security problems to the most talented University of Arkansas’ researchers, to recruit industry members to sustain the institute and provide research and educational vision, to assist Institute researchers in pursuing competitive research funding, and to facilitate improving the security education at the University of Arkansas

Arkansas Water Resource Center

The AWRC is one of a national network of 54 institutions that make up the National Institutes for Water Resources. It was founded in 1964 when US Congress passed the Water Resources Research Act. The Center utilizes scientific personnel and facilities of all campuses of the University of Arkansas System (and other Arkansas colleges and universities) in maintaining a water resources research program. The center supports specific research projects throughout Arkansas, which often provide research training opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, and it disseminates information on water resources via publications and conferences. The center works closely with federal, state, municipal, educational, and other public groups concerned with water resources in development of its research, training, and dissemination programs.

Center for Advanced Surface Engineering

The Center for Advanced Surface Engineering is a new federally funded research center led by the University of Arkansas that partners with Arkansas industries to create new products for use in manufacturing, aerospace and defense, agriculture, forestry, oil and gas, food packaging and health care.

The center is comprised of four interdisciplinary research teams made up of about 40 faculty members from 10 Arkansas institutions.

Long term plans include establishing start-up companies to commercialize technologies developed by the center, creating new products and new jobs to bolster the knowledge-based economy in Arkansas while also creating a workforce with the specialized skill-sets necessary to sustain industries that can utilize the center’s research.

Center for Excellence in Logistics and Distribution (CELDI)

Provide integrated solutions to logistics problems, through research related to modeling, analysis, and intelligent-systems technologies. Research endeavors are driven and sponsored by representatives from a broad range of member organizations, including manufacturing, maintenance, distribution, transportation, information technology, and consulting.

Center for Information Security and Reliability

The activities of this center includes, but not limited to the following: fostering multidisciplinary research, securing large-scale funding from federal, state, and other funding agencies, providing education and training to future work-force, increasing awareness in the field of information security and reliability by offering appropriate seminars and workshops.

Center for Innovation in Healthcare Logistics (CIHL)

Sponsored research to identify and foster systemic adoption of ground-breaking healthcare supply chain and logistic innovations through better information and improved logistics systems and processes.

Center for Power Optimization of Electro-Thermal Systems

Center for Power Optimization of Electro-Thermal Systems (POETS ) long term goal at the University of Arkansas is to increase the power density of current mobile electrified systems by 10-100 times over current state of the art systems. While ambitious, this would have profound impact on a mobile electrified infrastructure of the U.S. and beyond. On-highway vehicles could save between 100-300 million liters of fuel per year and could nearly double the range of all-electric vehicles. Off-highway vehicles could save on the order of 100 billion liters of fuel since their electrification is starting from a less mature point than current on-highway vehicles. Similarly, aircraft could see 10-30 billion liters of fuel saved as well as up to 10 million tons of CO2 saved from going into the high altitude atmosphere. These economic and environmental impacts are just the beginning of the art of the possible with the achievement of the POETS vision.

Genesis Technology Incubator

GENESIS is a technology-oriented business incubator located at the Arkansas Research and Technology Park in Fayetteville, Arkansas. GENESIS offers a variety of services to qualifying technology-intensive entrepreneurs who desire to base their operations here during the critical early stages of company development. There is an established track record of helping to launch successful firms that have a lasting positive impact on the economy of Northwest Arkansas, and we have an important role to fulfill in advancing the state into the new, knowledge-based economy of the 21 st Century.

Since its inception, GENESIS has assisted a number of technology-based entrepreneurs in growing their firms to the point of economic viability. The incubator has an important role as the entry point to the ARTP for start-up companies that are working to develop emerging technologies in a variety of fields. Providing support to these young firms enables GENESIS to serve as a catalyst for increasing the number of knowledge-based jobs in Northwest Arkansas and for improving the economic base of the region and the state.

Grid-Connected Advance Power Electronics System

The I/UCRC program within the NSF has been in existence for several decades. It is a vibrant program with over 50 centers around the country at any given time. GRAPES was founded in 2009 under this NSF program. The mission of this center is to accelerate the adoption and insertion of power electronics into the electric grid in order to improve system stability, flexibility, robustness, and economy. We expect to accomplish that mission by focusing on the following main objectives

To develop new technologies for advanced power electronic systems in the areas supporting grid connected distributed energy resources, power steering and routing devices, and intelligent load-side devices
To develop the software and tools for controlling embedded- and grid-connected power electronics to benefit the grid as well as controlled loads
To educate engineers who understand the power electronic technologies important to the member companies

High Density Electronics Center (HiDEC)

Institute for Advanced Data Analytics

The Institute for Advanced Data Analytics serves as a bridge between the University of Arkansas and healthcare-related industry for developing practical, implementable solutions to industry issues and problems.
The Institute also serve as a source of continuing education for healthcare"related enterprises that are engaged in Big Data initiatives and which seek to maximize the capabilities of their in-house talent to grow their analytic expertise.

Institute for Nanoscience and Engineering

The faculty of the Institute for Nanoscience and Engineering work together, across disciplines, to support innovative research at the frontline of science and engineering. The traditional labs of our faculty are still operating across campus, in Physics, Chemistry, Biological Science. The Institute also brings together Engineering minds from electrical, biological, mechanical, and civil fields. The common thread of all disciplines working at the Institute for Nanoscience and Engineering is to conduct research at the nanoscale level. The institute houses state of the art equipment with multi-user labs and cleanrooms designed for nano fabrication and characterization. By combining research goals, efforts, and resources, our inter-disciplinary team can create a collaborative science that exceeds what our labs can attain individually.

The Institute for Nanoscience and Engineering has a group of facilities that is unique among universities, including scanning tunneling microscopy, atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectric spectroscopy, a focus ion beam, scanning electron microscopy, electrical and magnetic characterization, single molecule/particle spectroscopy, auger spectroscopy, X-ray, Fourrier transform infrared spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. In addition, the institute benefits from the use of the High Performance Supercomputing Facility on campus.

Mack-Blackwell Transportation Center

Funds transportation-related studies targeted to improving the quality of life in rural areas. Investigates transportation-related issues pertaining to homeland security.

Membrane Research Center

The Membrane Research Center partners in MAST, one of NSF's longest running industry/university cooperative research centers (I/UCRC). The Center is a multi-university research cooperative between the University of Colorado, the New Jersey Institute of Technology, and the University of Arkansas and collaborates with researchers from several other universities within the US and internationally.
The Membrane Research Center specializes in basic research for development applications, understands resource allocation and has designed our program to complement our sponsors' strengths in product development. Our main focus is sponsor-relevant research, and our results have received global recognition.

National Center for Reliable Electric Power Transmission
