Degree Requirements

Bachelor's Degree Requirements

Engineering programs typically require successful completion of 125-130 credit hours, 30 of which must be taken at the University. These hours are divided between University courses, major courses, and general education courses. In general, students must maintain a C or better average and can only use 3-6 credit hours of D credit for their major courses.

Master's Degree Requirements

A minimum of 30 semester hours, no more than 10 of which may be transferred, minimum grade point average of 3.0 (4.0 = A); theses may be optional (may be written in absentia). Five year time limit. Applicants should contact individual departments for specific requirements.

Doctoral Degree Requirements

The minimum number of required credit hours is 54 semester hours and may not include undergraduate courses. Students with a master's degree must complete at least 36 semester hours of additional graduate work at BYU beyond the master's degree. With approval, they may apply up to 36 hours of a master's program toward a doctoral degree. Students must register for and complete a minimum of 18 hours of dissertation credit. Eight year time limit. Must register for at least two consecutive 6-hour semesters on the BYU campus. Must pass a written comprehensive and oral exam under the direction of the major department.
